Geo was a brand of small cars and SUVs. Geo was marketed by General Motors, its parent company under the Chevrolet division. Geo vehicles were sold through Chevrolet dealerships in North America beginning in 1989 in the U.S. and then later on in 1992 in Canada. It was founded in 1988 and became defunct in 1998 when it was merged into Chevrolet, largely due to the fading consumer interest in the economy compact market. The last vehicle of the Geo line, the Tracker, was discontinued in the year 2004.
The original slogan of the company was “Get to know Geo”. The company was formed by General Motors so General Motors could compete with the small but growing import market during the late 1980s. Geo models were produced and manufactured by General Motors through a joint–venture arrangement with Japanese import manufacturers. The Geo Prizm model was manufactured and produced at the GM/Toyota join–venture assembly plant in Fremont, California, while the Geo Metro and the Tracker were produced at the GM/Suzuki joint–venture assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. The Geo Spectrum and the Geo Storm were manufactured entirely by Isuzu in Japan.
During its years of existence, Geo produced several vehicles including the Geo Metro, which was a marketing and manufacturing variation of the Suzuki Cultus. The Geo Metro had four body styles: three–door hatchback, a four–door sedan, a five–door hatchback and a two–door convertible. This was ultimately replaced by a family vehicles based on the Daewoo Kalos. The Geo Storm was a sports car based on the Isuzu Impulse. The Storm was also available either as a two – door fastback or a hatchback. It became part of Geo’s line – up replacing the Geo Spectrum. The Geo Storm was the performance – oriented vehicle of the Geo Brand, produced by Isuzu in Japan. This model, however, made a quick departure in 1993 in spite of strong sales. Isuzu discontinued their car lines and focused on trucks and SUVs.
Another vehicle that formed part of the Geo family was the Geo Prizm, a compact four–door sedan that was based on the Toyota Corolla and the Toyota Sprinter. It is the successor to the Chevrolet Nova and Geo Spectrum, built by IsuzuThe Geo Prizm consistently won awards from the automotive industry, including the honor of being a Consumer’s Digest Best Buy. Despite this, however, the Geo Prizm was always outsold by Toyota Corolla. The last vehicle was the Geo Tracker. The Geo Tracker was a mini–SUV that was based on the Suzuki Escudo / Suzuku Sidekick. The Geo Tracker was part of the original Geo line–up in the year 1989 and was considered the longest running model. The Tracker was produced in Canada by CAMI Automotive and was available in either a hard–top configuration or a convertible, with either two doors or four doors. The buyer also had the option of choosing a rear – wheel drive or a four – wheel drive.Headlights by State: ______________________
