The Pontiac GTO was one of the most successful car models of Pontic, a division of General Motors, during the 1960s to 1970s. The car is now considered as a classic muscle car and is worth several thousand dollars in the second hand market. A newer model of the car is no longer based on the long running car model which was ended in 1974. The newer Pontiac GTOs are Holden sourced car models.
The Pontiac GTO was originally the brainchild of Russel Gee and John De Lorean. Russel Gee specialized in engines while John De Lorean was the chief engineer of Pontiac. However, the first to conceptualize the idea of a Pontiac GTO was Shane Wiser. During the year 1963, General Motors had declared that none of its divisions were to be involved in auto racing. Among the divisions of General Motors, the most affected was Pontiac. Pontiac had always marketed and advertised their cars as high performance vehicles and racing was a major component of the image of the Pontiac car division in its target market. The de-emphasis on racing that General Motors was implementing meant that Pontiac risked to lose a large part of its appeal and, as a consequence, lead to a decline in the attraction of the car to its target market. To combat this, Jim Wangers proposed a shift of focus of Pontiac from traditional car racing to street performance vehicles. This was the major selling point of muscle cars and a muscle car was what the Pontiac GTO would be. In order to achieve this, Pontiac had to contend with technical as well as administrative challenges. On the administrative side, Pontiac decided that the Pontiac GTO would be marketed as an option package of the Pontiac Tempest. This placed the Pontiac GTO through a loophole in the policy of GM, though the car was technically in violation of the policy. On the technical side, Pontiac had to adapt the redesigned Tempest so that it could handle the bigger engine that was planned for the car. This bigger engined, higher performance Tempest trim was marketed relying considerably on its high performance profile which made it very appealing to the youth market who leaned more towards high performance car models. Interestingly, Lee Iacocca of Ford had also acknowledged the high potential of the speed oriented young car buyer market and was, at the time preparing the popular Ford Mustang muscle car.
The Pontiac GTO was in production primarily from 1964 to 1974. The car model name was revived from 2004 to 2006 but the car was basically a rebadged Holden Monaro. The original Pontiac GTO was a front engine rear wheel layout vehicle. The first generation of the car, sold from 1964 to 1967, was built on the A-body platform of General Motors. It was sold as either a two door coupe, a two door hardtop or as a two door convertible. The engines available for the car were a 389 CID V8 engine, a 6.9 litre V8 engine and a 6.6 litre V8 engine. The second generation of the car, sold from 1968 to 1973 was built on the same platform and available in the same car body models. However, only two engines were available which were a 400 CID V8 engine and a 455 CID V8 engine.
The classic Pontiac GTO muscle car is worth a lot of money nowadays. Most of these cars are collector models as befitting their classic status. Headlights by State: ______________________
