Ford chose 2006 as the year for unveiling its newest visage consisting of the “three-bar grille” with the make’s logo at the center. With the new face of the Ford came the anticipation of a new generation of vehicles of finer build and quality. And as if pre-planned for synchrony, Ford released the 2006 Fusion, one of the company’s strongest contenders in the mid-size car category. The Fusion ultimately took on the role as the launching vehicle of the company’s brand-new image.

Aside from being the first car to carry Ford’s new look, the Ford Fusion was also the first mid-size sedan released since the Taurus. The situation and the timing had the Ford Fusion staring at bigger shoes of expectation to fill in. But this was no tough feat for the Fusion. As the succeeding lines will show you, the Ford Fusion fit those shoes with ease. The reason being is that the Ford Fusion rakes up strong points in its excellent driving dynamics, outstanding design, and an unexpectedly competitive price tag.

The Ford Fusion is offered in three front-wheel drive trim levels: the S, SE, and the SEL. The S models run on a 2.3L 4-cylinder Duratec engine that generates 160 hp and comes with “anti-lock” brakes, an air-conditioning system, and a bevy of electronic accessories. Both the SE and SEL versions can come equipped with either the standard four-cylinder or the V6 Duratec engine that produces some 221hp. These two other trim levels have leather seating and powered climate control as added perks. The Ford Fusion works with an automatic or a manual transmission in models with four-cylinder engines. Models carrying the V6 can be had with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Another laudable factor in the Ford Fusion is its overall look. The Fusion’s exterior appearance exudes an aura of class and sophistication. The Fusion’s cabin lives up to all the hype generated by its outer design owing to the sleek lines and cohesive textures. The Fusion’s long wheelbase provides the driver legroom that secures a comfortable ride. Its ergonomic seats and the strong quality material that they are made of is enough to thwart the raised eyebrows over the questionable plastic material that comprises some parts of the interior. And as an added treat, the company’s latest not-so-secret weapon, the Ford Sync, which delivers impressive technological feats, is available in the more recent Fusions.

Road-wise, the Ford Fusion performs quite well. The Fusion in automatic gear may lack the bounce and oomph present in a model on manual gear. But the Fusion’s acceleration capability runs at par with its contemporaries, especially with a V6 engine, where car power is greater. The model’s fuel economy is a wild card; some owners get great results while others get the opposite.

Speedsters may take delight in the fact that the Fusion also has its sporty side, particularly that of NASCAR kind. In fact, the Fusion was the first car to grace the NASCAR laps since Ford’s Torino, way back in 1968.

There may certainly be better counterparts of the Fusion sold in the market today. The Fusion is not an A-grade perfect car with its minor mishaps in its gears and some dubious interior materials. However, if a car-buyer has the bigger picture as his vantage point, the Ford Fusion’s above average on-the-road performance, fresh design, and affordable pricing are reasons enough for him to consider getting one.
