Leland James, in the late 1930s, was seeking a more durable and a lighter truck that could haul more payload translating to bringing in more payload for his company. He approached truck manufacturers with the idea of building the truck components with light aluminum instead of steel. At that time, aluminum was not widely used in industrial applications. Leland James was turned away by the truck manufacturers. So Leland James decided to hire a group of engineers to just build the vehicles himself. In 1940, Leland James helped establish the Freightways Manufacturing Company. Two years later, in 1942, the company changed its name to Freightliner Corporation. In 1981, Daimler–Benz AG, a German manufacturer of engines, automobiles and motor vehicles founded in 1926, purchased Freightliner from Consolidated Freightways. Over the years, Freightliner has produced and manufactured quality trucks. The Freightliner’s Business Class M2 continues to meet the demands of customers whose businesses depend on the reliability and excellent condition of their vehicles.
