The name Fleetwood has been around since the 1920s. Fleetwood cars were originally unique, specifically made cars which were custom designed depending on what the owner wanted. When the Fleetwood name was acquired by GM, a fleet of Cadillac Fleetwood car models were produced and fast became the most notable Cadillac car models. Several generations of Cadillac Fleetwood car models were manufactured from 1947 to 1996 and in 1999.

Among car models, the Cadillac Fleetwood is one of the most popular and best selling. The origins of the car can be traced to the Fleetwood Metal Body Company, an independent car body maker that started business in 1909. Fleetwood gained a large following with car owners buying the chassis, car engines and other parts from other car makers and buying the car body from Fleetwood. The company was eventually acquired by GM and, in 1927, limited Cadillac Fleetwood models were released under the Cadillac luxury car brand name. The Cadillac Fleetwood line of cars has always been placed at the top of the line of car models offered by Cadillac. The Cadillac Fleetwood is an iconic car. It is readily recognizable and has been used by many popular personalities. It has also featured in several films most notable of which is the 1974 film "Gone in 60 Seconds" which featured several models of Cadillac Fleetwood cars. The Cadillac Fleetwood car models enjoyed continuous successes until its eventually discontinuation in 1999.

The Cadillac Fleetwood has always been one of the biggest of American cars. The luxuriousness of the car is exceedingly impressive which translated to a very heavy car. Fortunately, the Cadillac Fleetwood has never lacked power. For the majority of the car models released as Cadillac Fleetwoods, the engine of these cars has been the powerful V8 engines. During the times that the company has offered V6 engines, its followers have always been disappointed and Cadillac has always been quick to offer a more powerful option. The Cadillac Fleetwood has also been one of the toughest, most durable cars. Many models of the Cadillac Fleetwood were tough enough to pull large caravans. Cadillac Fleetwood models are also highly sought after as spaceous limousine type vehicles.

Cadillac Fleetwood cars are highly priced automobiles. A few classic Cadillac Fleetwood cars have been sold carrying prices in excess of one million dollars. As a luxury vehicle the Cadillac Fleetwood is not very accessible for regular buyers. With the high valuation of the cars, Cadillac Fleetwood owners are also reluctant to let go of their cars and with good reason. The Cadillac Fleetwood is one of the most impressive cars that Cadillac has ever produced.
