More than forty inches of legroom is a quality of considerable advantage in any vehicle. And any motorist searching for comfort on the road will most likely consider that extra room as manna from the automobile heavens. So, if there is one reason why the Ford Five Hundred made an impression to the car-loving public, it is definitely because of travel convenience afforded by the sedan's spacious build. Ford Motors, for a long time already, has been recognized as a company whose product preference geared heavily towards mammoth vehicles (like say, trucks). But sometime in the first half of 2004, Ford Motors realized of the company's need to explore and strengthen the passenger car line. The company focused its attentions into coming out with a vehicle that suited a family of four and above. Ford's next project was a car designed to whet the automobile appetites of large-car aficionados. Thus, the Ford Five Hundred, Ford's full-size sedan, was introduced to North American motorists in September 2004 for the 2005 model year. Gracing showrooms since 2005, this large sedan debuted with a design based on Volvo's S80 platform. Needless to say, this meant that the Five Hundred inherited S80's all-wheel drive and safety system specs. This detail also enabled the Five Hundred to deliver a pleasant ride and proficient handling, particularly with the car's steering quality. There was a minor disappointment in the car's breaking performance, which was at best mediocre. But this shortcoming was ameliorated by the Five Hundred's commendable passive safety features, which became a compulsory addition in all models in 2007. Add to this is the fact that the Five Hundred passed the NHTSA and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests with flying colors. The Ford Five Hundred came in three trims for its initial year: the SE, SEL, and Limited. These trim types all ran in front-wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive feature is attainable upon request. A look under the hood reveals the heart of the Ford Five Hundred. This sedan rolls with a 3.0L six-cylinder engine capable of generating 203hp under a 6-speed automatic transmission. Visually the Five Hundred came in two styles, depending on the trim type. The Five Hundred SEL had seventeen-inch wheels made of silver alloy and had fabric seating inside. The driver's seat had 6 or 8- way power controls while the passenger seats had 2 or 4-way power. The Five Hundred Limited trim's wheels are an inch larger than that of the SEL's and were made of polished alloy. Seats received fine leather upholstery while the door trims were in leatherette. Where the Five Hundred highly excelled in looks, it plateaued in acceleration performance. This is one of the evident drawbacks of the vehicle. Its Duatec engine fared poorly against its competitors. However, the stellar crash test results and Five Hundred's budget-friendly pricing make it a practical family car. But even in its promise, the Ford Five Hundred's commercial existence was what was called a brief run. Even at the onset of the model in the market, its sales were weak and continued to weakened in the following years. The lack of market response and the weak (and unrecognizable) nameplate led the Five Hundred to hit the dust in 2007 culminating a market run of just a mere three years. But the minds at Ford Motors had something else up their sleeves. The demise of the Five Hundred came with a plan. Ford Motors is set to release an improved and revamped version of the fallen model, the Ford Taurus. The new and renamed Five Hundred hits markets in 2008 and would have a bigger, meaner engine together with a new promise of reliability and quality. . Headlights by State: ______________________
