The Pontiac Firebird was a long running pony car made by the General Motors Pontiac Motor Division. The Pontiac Firebird was very popular throughout its production years and sales for the car were generally good until its later years when the slow down of the sales of the car resulted in its discontinuation. The Pontiac Firebird was first sold in the car market in 1967 and continued production up to 2002. The introduction year of the Pontiac Firebird coincided with that of the Chevrolet Camaro which shared the same F-body platform with the car. The two cars were also released in the same year as the Mercury Cougar and the highly popular Ford Mustang. The first generation of the Pontiac Firebird featured what became popularly known as "coke bottle" design. The Pontiac Firebird was originally given to Pontiac as a consolation project. At the time, Pontiac wanted to manufacture their own two seater sports car to be based on the Banshee concept car. At the time, General Motors was marketing aggressively the Chevrolet Corvette and General Motors did not want a competitor to the car. The Pontiac Motor Division was instead allowed to share the F-body platform with Chevrolet so that Pontiac could enter the pony car market instead. This was a disappointing turn of affairs for Pontiac. The car division remad the F-body design according to their own styling and engineering choices which produced the Pontiac Firebird. The first Pontiac Firebird was mainly related to the Chevrolet Camaro, though it featured bumpers that were integrated into the front end of the car and featured slit taillights obviously taken from the Pontiac GTO. Although slightly delayed in its release, the Pontiac Firebird proved to be quite successful in the car markets and the car continued production until it was ended in 2002 due to the declining sales of the car. The Pontiac Firebird muscle car or pony car is one of the most recognizable car models on the road today. The car was built on the F-body platform of General Motors and, throughout its production period, the car maintained its front engine rear wheel drive layout. The design of the Pontiac Firebird was primarily inspired by the Banshee concept cars of General Motors in its later years and the last, fourth generation of the Pontiac Firebird was based on the Banshee IV concept car of General Motors introduced in 1991. Throughout its production, the Pontiac Firebird featured engines from almost all of the divisions under General Motors, though the car was primarily powered by Pontiac engines. However, in 1982, the engines available for the car were changed to the corporate engine versions of General Motors. For second hand car models, the Pontiac Firebird usually carry relatively high price tags. This is primarily due to the popularity of the car and the resulting high market perception of the Pontiac Firebird. Interested buyers of Pontiac Firebirds will have a tough time looking for readily available models of the car as all versions of the Pontiac Firebird, from the earlier versions up to its later versions, are well known for its impressive build quality, performance and design. .
