The Pontiac Fiero was a sports car made by the Pontiac Motor Division of the American car corporation, General Motors. The car sold very well during its production period. The Pontiac Fiero was sold by Pontiac from 1984 up to 1988. The car was originally inspired by the Pontiac Banshee project of John Delorean. The Pontiac Fiero was made by Pontiac in the expectation of General Motors of the growing need for a fuel economical sport car. Originally, General Motors were not very interested in developing another two seater sport car since they were already selling the popular Chevrolet Corvette. Ever since the coupes of Pontiac from 1926 up to 1938, Pontiac had not released any other two seater car before it released the Pontiac Fiero. The Pontiac Fiero also has the distincition of being the firs mid engine sport car to be mass produced by a United States car maker. The design of the Pontiac Fiero was very radical and impressive at the time. In an effort to improve the fuel efficiency of the car, the Pontiac Fiero was built to be light weight and the car was given a mid engine layout. The car also had a very aerodynamic design. As an economy model, the Pontiac Fiero also sourced many of its components such as the suspension, the brakes and the tires from the economy cars of GM such as the Chevrolet Chevette and the Chevrolet Citation. However, this meant that the handling of the car was basically similar in profile to this economy car models. As a result, the Pontiac Fiero quickly lost the initial high regard it had with car critics. This did not affect the sales of the car, however and the car continued to be sold in high enough volumes that Pontiac had to operate three shifts in the production factories of the Pontiac Fiero and still could not keep up with the demand for the car. When, in 1985, the demand for fuel economy began to wane, the Pontiac Fiero was engineered for better performance having more engine power and a sportier handling and ride profile. The Pontiac Fiero was discontinued in 1988 primarily because of the internal forecast of General Motors of an expected decrease in demand for the car. The Pontiac Fiero was still quite profitable during the final year of its production. The Pontiac Fiero sports car was either a two door fastback or a two door notchback. It was built on the P-body platform of General Motors and it had a rear middle engine rear wheel drive layout. Two engines were available for the Pontiac Fiero during its production period. These were a Tech IV inline four 2.5 litre engine and a V6 2.8 litre engine. The transmissions used for the Pontiac Fiero were a THM-125 three speed automatic transmission, a Getrag 282 five speed manual transmission, an Isuzu five speed manual transmission and a four speed manual transmission. The Pontiac Fiero is available now in second hand car lots. This car would be a good for sports car buyers on a budget. . Headlights by State: ______________________
