Forged from the fusion of two international car giants comes the Ford Festiva. With an interior volume index weighing just under 100 cubic feet, the Ford Festiva is indeed a vehicle of diminutive proportions. But owing to its size and modest features, this subcompact vehicle is perfect for the neophyte driver or the seasoned motorist on a tight budget.

The earliest version of the vehicle was released in 1986 in Japan. This debut model was originally manufactured by the South Korean car company Kia, which then had shared ownership with Ford Motors. The vehicle took the blueprints of the Mazda DA and B series design and engineering platforms as a springboard for its own. This initial model was then subsequently followed-up with the release of the 1988 versions in Northern America and in Europe as a response to Ford's latest marketing campaign to sell reliable automobiles. The sales performance of 3-door hatchback was wobbly at first, as its slightly spacious and relatively cheaper contemporary, the Yugo brought in a stiff, if not fierce competition. However, quality problems pertaining to the Yugo slowly paved the way for the first generation Ford Festiva to be a marketing success in the late eighties. Its nineties counterpart, however, did not fare that well in the automobile industry at the onset of the decade. This initial commercial success of the generation Ford Festiva suffered the customary birthing pains of any debut model vehicle.

The 1991 - 1994 version came with 3-door and 5-door hatchback variations. Both ran with a less-than-stellar 46kW 1.3-liter engine. It featured the usual AM/FM radio while air conditioning was not a staple feature in the Festiva. The buyer, however, could opt for one to be installed. Automobile pundits complained of its near-antediluvian physical features and of its dodgy build quality. Furthermore, the earlier versions suffered from poor steering and handling attributes.

Automakers at Ford Motors answered critics by developing a more stylish and larger Ford Festiva released in 1994. The first wave of the 1994 – 2000 second generation version, although reviving the publicly-endeared “bubble-back,” failed to address the problems which placed the model under a bad light in the first place. Despite Festiva's physical make-over, its heavy steering problems, inferior fittings, and unexciting engine type remained. It does, however, win extra brownie points for fuel economy at a modest, if not average, engine performance; and for its decent dashboard lay-out.

The final wave of the second generation came with a more-powerful 56kW 1.5-liter engine in the forms of the more expensive 5-door GLXi and the athletic 3-door Trio S. These newer versions of the Festiva offer more efficient four-speed automatic transmission and mightier torque power. The good build quality of these models sufficiently makes up for the lack of luxury in its fittings. Although the new model's high seating serves best for shorter people, its expansive view from its big windows and relatively commodious legroom are delightful plus factors for drivers of all heights and sizes.

Like many automobiles, the Ford Festiva has had its bevy of tweaks and alterations both for its appearance and mechanical features. Over the years it has evolved and has stepped up to the industrial challenges of its era without forgetting to address its core market. While the Festiva may not exactly be the cream of the crop of Ford's roster, this subcompact vehicle promises to deliver the basics for the practical motorist who aspires reliability and cost-efficiency in a vehicle at an economical value.
