With a lifespan that was nothing more than ephemeral, the Ford Fairmont is a vehicle whose only memory lies in archives and as a prized item in collectors’ garages. However, it lived a life with considerable market success. It garnered an impressive 422, 690 sold items in its debut year, that’s 25% of the compact vehicle market. With its fuel economy, spacious cabin accommodation, and dependability, the Ford Fairmont is undoubtedly an automobile engine of compact-sized proportions. The seventies saw the overwhelming rise of oil prices throughout the world. The biggest blow hit the automobile industry like a knockout punch. Consumers avoided any mammoth-of-a size sedan in favor of slightly smaller ones in an attempt to achieve fuel efficiency. Ford Motors was then one of the manufactures of these ultra-large sedans. The change in their sales slope brought the company to realize their need to produce cars that would cater to the new market demand. Thus, the Ford Fairmont came into being. The Ford Fairmont was released in the North American market in 1978 as rear-wheel drive vehicle. This compact-sized car employed the Ford Fox platform. This was the same platform, which would be successful in the years to come as it was the same one used in so many of Ford’s legendary models such as the Mustang, Thunderbird, and the Lincoln Continental. The Fairmont came in three initial designs: a two-door sedan, a four-door sedan, and a five-door wagon. Later on, however, Ford added the popular Fairmont Futura, which was largely influenced by the celebrated Ford Falcon. Performance wise, the Falcon did address the driving market’s need of fuel economy. And it helped, too, that the features such as a sturdy body and a generous storage capacity were maintained despite the relatively smaller build of the Fairmont. In no time soon, the Fairmont had already surpassed the salability of its predecessor, the Maverick, by becoming an overnight success for Ford Motors. Unofficially, the Fairmont was considered as “America’s Volvo,” as it was being compared and likened to the Volvo and BMW models of its day. The Ford Fairmont had a wide array of options when it came to matters pertaining to what’s under the hood. This vehicle came with a 2.3L 4-cylinder or 3.3L 6- cylinder engines and came with three, four, or five-speeds in manual transmission. A year later after its release, the Fairmont received a third engine type in the form of a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine of the Mustang fame. Impressed by the victorious run of the Fairmont, Ford released more compact-size sedans. But this proved to be fatal to the Fairmont’s car market existence. In 1981, the Granada was introduced, which was better in all areas when compared to the Fairmont. Soon enough, everybody forgot about the Fairmont. With the coming of the “better” car in the form of the Granada, along with the decreasing economic stability of the eighties, the Fairmont’s sales dropped to a measly 81, 000.
