The first generation of the Ford Explorer Sport Trac was introduced in 2000 for the 2001 model year. Up front, it looks like a full-size SUV but as you move around to see the whole of it, you will be surprised to see a small pick up bed attached just behind its standard SUV doors. Although it shares the basic structure of the Ford Explorer, the Sport Trac is actually 7 in longer than the SUV. The longer wheelbase allows room for the 4-foot cargo bed as well as plenty of legroom for the rear passengers. But despite its edge of having a dual-nature configuration, the initial package of the Sport Trac did not appeal much to the majority of the market. The intention for creating such a model was to be able to cater to a market in need of a vehicle for light duty cargo and hauling, however, the execution was simply lacking.

The first generation of the Sport Tract is equipped with the 4.0 L Cologne V6 engine rated at 210 hp. It has a 5-speed M50D manual transmission and an optional 5-speed 5R55E automatic. It is based on the second generation Explorer and is offered in both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive. It has a rugged exterior which is carried over to its interior as well. Such style is apparent in its floor covering, which is solely available in full rubber. The pickup bed is made of sheet-molded composite, which according to the Ford is 20% lighter, and rust and dent-proof than the conventional steel box. Moreover, while most pickups have the sliding rear window typical to most pickups, the Sport Trac has a power “Breezeway” window. The vehicle also possessed so many standard feature that it might have been an instant success if not for its handling qualities, hauling abilities, and off-road capabilities which proved to be below average. These factors imminently pushed the popularity scale of the Sport Trac downward.

However, in early 2006, the 1997 Ford Sport Trac was released. This time, it s based on the fourth generation Explorer. Moreover, a 4.6 L 24-valve Modular V8 engine rated at 292 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque which came with 6-speed automatic transmission. Moreover, the interior is comfortable and works well enough on an average level.

The 2008 version of the Sport Trac is equipped with both standard and high-end features such as the new Ford's Sync system which allows voice activation of cell phones, PDAs and MP3 player. Power rear window and side curtain airbags were also included in this package.

Suffice it to say, the new version has somewhat upped the popularity scale of the vehicle. But despite the fact that the combination of the functionality of a truck and the luxurious drive comfort of an SUV proved to be a clever innovation, the Sport Trac still needs to be further upgraded if it hopes to overshadow Honda's Ridgeline and Nissan's Frontier.
