The Ford Expedition is a four-door full-size SUV manfactured by the Ford Motor Company since 1997 as a replacement to the Ford Bronco. It was designed to compete with Chevrolet's Suburban and Tahoe, GMC's Yukon, and Toyota's Land Cruiser. It comes in a rear wheel or four wheel drive with a seating capacity of up to nine passengers, and a range of V8 engines.
The first generation of the Ford Expedition was produced in 1997 until 2002 using the Ford U Platform. It came in a 4.6 L (Modular) V8 and a 5.4 L (Triton) V8 engines with 4-speed automatic transmissions and having 8,000 lbs towing capacity. The 1997 to 1998 versions were equipped with either the 215 hp 4.6 L V8 engine, or the 230 hp 5.4 L V8. By 1999 until 2002, both engines were given more power. The 4.6 L engine now has a 240 hp while the 5.5 L engine was brought up to 260 hp. And for variety, the ford Expedition also came in two trims. First was the XLT, which came with 17" silver alloy wheels, cloth seating, manual air conditioning, and 6-speaker audio system. The second was the two-toned Eddie Bauer which had leather seating, automatic air conditioning with separate rear controls, full overhead console with storage, a 7-speaker audiophile audio system.
By 2003, the second generation of the Ford Expedition was released. It still used the Ford U platform but the rear axle and suspension was changed to an independent suspension configuration to improve the riding comfort. And aside from the new features which included the power folding third-row seats and turn-signal mirror, the engines were again upgraded. The 2003-2005 versions of the second generation Ford Expedition were equipped with either 232 hp 4.5 L V8, or the 260 hp 5.4 L V8 engine. However, by 2005, the 4.5 L V8 engine was relinquished. The 5.4 L V8 engine was then modified from a 2-valve single overhead camshaft (SOHC) to a 3-valve SOHC cylinder head with variable camshaft timing (VCT) to improve the combustion efficiency, power, and performance. The engine was now rated at 300 hp and 365 lbt-ft of torque, and has the towing capacity of up to 9,200 lbs, with a fuel efficiency of 18mpg. Moreover, two other trims were added to the existing XLT and Eddie Bauer trims. The Expedition Limited Edition is ideal for off-road driving, while the King Ranch edition has a luxurious western theme.
In 2007, the third generation of Ford Expedition was released. For this version, instead of having the Ford U platform like its predecessors, this version uses the new T1 platform, which provides 10% more torsional rigidity, or chassis stiffness, than the previous versions. This version also has independent rear suspension which allows each rear wheel on the same axle to move independently, in reaction to uneven terrains. Engine-wise, it still uses the same Triton V8 engine, which was used in the 2005 version. In addition, an extended-wheelbase design of the 2007 version was also released, known as the Expedition EL, better known as the Expedition Max in Mexico and Canada. The extended version is about 15.8 in longer than the standard Expedition and has a 131 in wheelbase, which provides 24 cubic feet of additional cargo space.
Thus, suffice it to say, within the span of a few years, several modifications have been made on this magnificent SUV to cater to your driving and cargo needs. But not only is Ford Expedition renowned for its utility use, its macho and chiselled form is most appealing as well. Moreover, there are several trims are made available to suit your preference and lifestyle. This SUV is most appropriate for cross country driving with the entire family. Even the police and fire departments prefer this SUV not only for its size and capacity, but also for its handling efficiency. Headlights by State: ______________________
