The Hyundai Excel was a popular subcompact hatchback and sedan car model by Hyundai. The car was available in the United States car market from 1985 to 1989. On its release the Hyundai Excel achieved record sales in the American market primarily due to a very low price.
The Hyundai Excel arrived in the United States car market in 1986 and promptly broke the record for sales for a first year import. It was also the first Hyundai car model to enter the American car market and was the only model sold by Hyundai at the time. The first models of the Hyundai Excel were available in 4 door sedans and 4 door hatchbacks car configurations. A 2 door hatchback was added to the line up later on. The car was priced at less than $5,000.00 and was voted in Fortune magazine's "Best Product #10". Due to its bargain basement price and the vote of confidence, the Hyundai Excel reached record numbers in sales selling as much as 168,882 units in sales for its first year and production of the Hyundai Excel exceeded one million units in 1986. However, the Hyundai Excel soon proved to be a major disappointment for its owners as numerous technical problems began showing up. This led to a sharp decline in sales. The appalling performance of the Hyundai Excel completely eroded market confidence on the Hyundai brand name which the company is still struggling with up to now.
The Hyundai Excel was based on the Mitsubishi Mirage. The car was built on the same platform as the Mirage and also had the same transmissions and engine. A majority of the suspension parts were also carried over. A twin car of the Hyundai Excel was the Mitsubishi Precis which was also the price leader of the Mitsubishi line of car models. The Mitsubishi Precis had a 1.5 litre I4 engine which had an output of 68 hp. Transmissions available for the car were 3 speed automatic, 4 speed manual and 5 speed manual transmission. Performance for the car was not very impressive. The car had a low acceleration profile and often struggled with the automatic transmission. The manual transmission Hyundai Excel had a better acceleration performance but only just. The car also did not handle corners very well and body lean was also commonplace. The Hyundai Excel was also a noisy car and the riders of the car would often have to deal with their conversations being dampened by loud road noises. The most common problems of the Hyundai Excel include transmission problems, engine misfires and stalls and water leaks. The interior of the Hyundai was just adequate, about what can be expected from a compact. The redeeming values of the car, aside from its price, included a high fuel economy and good quality car assembly.
The Hyundai Excel is excellent mainly for its cheap price. Otherwise, the car would have been mediocre at best. In today's car market, the Hyundai Excel exists primarily at second hand car dealers. The Hyundai Excel has a very low market value and should have quite low prices. However, they are not really worth the buy. Headlights by State: ______________________
