The first Ford Econoline Cargo was released in 1961, although the current generation was technically introduced in 1992. However, by 1998, it has been referred to as the E-Series. The E-Series cargo line has always been available in E-150, E-250, and E-350 models with extended and extended lengths. The 1992 versions of the E-Series Cargo vans were initially equipped with an inline-six engine with three optional gasoline V8s and a diesel V8. Five years after the engines were changed to a new standard V6 engine, two new V8 engines, and a new V10 engine, whereas the V8 diesel engine was retained. Style-wise, the E-Series Cargo was revamped in order to meet the latest interior standards of the Ford range. The exterior of the cargo van was also redesigned. The sides were now more rounded in order to be in line with the oval-theme that Ford was employing. In 2000, added features such as antilock brakes, passenger front airbags, and a stilt steering wheel. Three years after, the E-Series Cargo was given another grille design featuring two vertical bars with the Ford badge perched on the grille instead of the hood lip. By 2008, the basic body design of the cargo van was retained, although, mechanically the van underwent major upgrades. The braking and suspension systems as well as the steering configuration were modified in order to improve driving dynamics. The front grille was also redesigned and the load-carrying capacity was increased. Size-wise, the E-50 is the half ton variant of Ford’s cargo van lineup, much like the F-100 variant of the F-Series trucks. The E-250 is the cargo van counter part of the ¾ ton F-250 truck. And similarly, the one ton E-350 is the cargo van counterpart of the F-350 heavy duty truck. The E-150 model is available only in standard length, while the E-250 and the E-350 are available in standard and extended lengths. The base E-series models are lightly equipped, however, it can be customized according to customer’s needs and specifications. Engine-wise, Ford offers four choices of engines for the E-series cargo vans. The E-150 and E-250 models have a standard 4.6 L V8 which generates 225 hp and 286 lb-ft of torque. However, this engine is fairly weak than the 255 hp 5.4 L V8 with 350 lb-ft of torque which is optional for the E-150 and E-250 while it is the standard engine for the E-350 Super Duty. Transmissions for both engines come in 4-speed automatic. The E-350 has optional 305 hp 6.8 L V10 with 420 lb-ft of torque, and a more powerful 235 hp 6.0 L PowerStroke turbodiesel V8 with 440 lb-ft of torque. The diesel engine also proved to have good fuel economy. Since the 1980’s has been the number one selling full-sized cargo van. And despite the minor changes over the many years, that still is significant for many E-Series customers because the van’s utilitarian nature mostly limits its luxury-based upgrades to make way for maximum functionality. But surely, that is well enough since Ford’s E-Series cargo vans have proven the worth of being an efficient utility vehicle of all time. Related Bookmarks
