Eagle used to be an all wheel-drive passenger vehicle manufacture by American Motor Corporation. It was first introduced in 1979 as a 1980 model of a coupe, a sedan and a wagon based on the AMC Concord. However, in 1988, the AMC was bought by the Chrysler Company thereby making Eagle a complete marquee of the Chrysler group. This specific marquee was called the Jeep/Eagle group. However, due to some reasons and low sale output, the production of the brand has been stopped in 1998.
The birth of the jeep brand in 1979 was spearheaded by the Roy Lunn’s addition in the AMC. This chief engineer of Jeep joined an AMC Concord body with a Jeep-like 4-wheel-drive driveline. This provided for a fuel efficient Jeep as an answer to the energy crisis then. The Eagle was then mass-produced with a state of the art automatic transmission. In 1980, the AMC Concord has its variations in the form of a four-door sedan, a coupe and a station wagon. In 1982, low-drag disc brakes were introduced together with options for 5-speed manual transmission or automatic transmission that received wider gear ratios for better fuel economy. Three years after, significant changes were seen in the models. The revision of the exterior styling to give way to the power bulge hood and the grille header bar and hood ornament or trim strip were removed. In 1988, the sedan and the limited wagon were dropped. This was also the time when Chrysler acquired the whole brand changing the name of the AMC Eagle to Eagle Wagon. The next year the Renault Medallion was introduced as the badged version of the Renault 21. Two new models were introduced: the Vista that has a 3-door hatchback, station wagon and 4-door sedan varieties and the Premier. Both of these vehicles were still badged models. The brand continued to badge several models until 1998 where total production was stopped. Several reasons can be attributed to this including inadequate marketing and competitive marketplace. However, the two most crucial reasons were the badging and the success of the Jeep. Although badging is a common process in the automotive business, all vehicles of Eagles were badged models making customer decide to buy the same car from more famous brands. Being a Jeep/Eagle group under Chrysler, they had the same showroom. The popularity of the Jeep Grand Cherokee eclipsed that of the Eagle leading to its eventual dissolution.
The famous Eagle models include the 1980 AMC Eagle because of its fuel efficiency measures, the Talon because it faired well in popularity of foreign Japanese imports and the Summit because it was one of the passenger car lines to expand the marketing mix of the Jeep dealer sales and service network in North America.
Although the Eagle has since stopped its manufacture in 1998, there are still people out there who are hopeful of its recurrence in future. After all, Eagle is one of the well-loved brands.
The Eagle remains to be one of the highly collected brands because its older models still work efficiently until today.Headlights by State: ______________________
