In April 0f 1981, Ford Motor Company introduced the sport compact Ford EXP. This was the first two seaters vehicle released by Ford in twenty five years. It was created to be more affordable and efficient than the Thunderbird, to cater to the eighties lifestyle. Alongside its release, Mercury also introduced the LN7 as variant for the EXP.
The non-boxy 3-door body hatchback of the EXP was fitted on the Escort’s 94.2 in wheelbase. It used the FF CE 14 platform with a 70 hp 1.6 L CVH 14 engine and a standard 4-speed IB4 manual transaxle.
Although it was priced higher than the Escort, it was packed with power brakes, engine gauges, tachometer, full carpeting, and a cargo area security shade. The EXP was available in 4-speed manual, 5-speed manual, and 3-speed automatic transmissions. Models with manual transmissions had a sport tuned exhaust, while models with automatic transmissions had a wide-open throttle cut-out switch for the optional air conditioning compressor clutch.
In 1982, an 80 hp version of the 1.6 L CVH14 engine was made available which provided higher compression, larger air cleaner intake, low restriction exhaust, larger carburetor, and a higher-lift camshaft. But while the EXP was being upgraded, the Mercury LN7's production was discontinuation after 1983 due to its unpopularity.
By 1984, EXP Turbo Coupe was released. The turbocharged 1.6 L CVH14 engine rated to 80 hp was raised to 120hp. The EXP version had a unique front air dam and rear decklid spoiler, black wheel flares, and black rocker panel moldings in an attempt top capture the youth market. But despite the efforts, Ford EXP has never risen from its unimpressive sales state. it was primarily due to its worn-out styling and inadequate performance under the sports car line-up.
By mid 1980's two-seater vehicles were so much in demand that the Pontiac Fiero and Toyota MR2 became so popular. Yet despite their popularity Ford EXP's sales were very slow. Upon hearing the news of the EXP's imminent demise, the Ford employees at Wayne, Michigan plant took it upon themselves to recreate the look of the unpopular sport compact vehicle.
The result was the 1986½ Escort EXP with a sleek new front-end design. The new version had an air dam and flush-mounted headlamps with wrap around marker lenses. Bumper lamps were placed in the bumper region beside a wide center slot. The rear hatch with integral spoiler was in a bubbleback style.
By 1987, two new trims for the EXP coupe were released: the Luxury Coupe and the Sport Coupe. The Luxury Coupe was equipped with a throttle-body injected version of the 1.9 L CVH engine rated at 90 hp, while the Sport Coupe had a fuel-injected high output version of the 1.9 L CVH engine rated at 106 hp.
Indeed, the sales of the EXP improved as much as was anticipated, however, it only lasted for a few weeks. Thus, the company turned their attention towards improving a potential new coupe design. Thus, the For Probe was given birth. Headlights by State: ______________________
