The Honda Civic Del Sol was a convertible car made by Honda from 1992 to 1997. The car was based on the popular Honda Civic platform and was meant to be the replacement of the Honda CR-X. Although released in Japan in 1992, the car was only released in the United States in 1993. The Honda Civic Del Sol was a good seller in the American car market. The Honda Civic Del Sol debuted to an excited market upon its release. Honda had built up an enthusiastic following with their Honda CR-X model. Relying on this, the Honda car company was reasonably assured about the success of the Civic Del Sol. However, the initial reaction of the car owners regarding the Honda Civic Del Sol was soon dampened. Many car enthusiasts saw the car as an underperformer and the initially attractive targa stylings of the Honda Civic Del Sol proved to have several technical drawbacks. The Honda Civic Del Sol suffered from several limitations which made it unpopular as well. It had a small trunk space, especially when the targe top was stowed, the roof leaked water and the car body was prone to twists when the top was off. Sales of the Honda Civic Del Sol were lower than expected and the car model was discontinued in 1997. Strictly speaking, the Honda Civic Del Sol is not really a true convertible car. The design of the car aimed to get a convertible "feel" instead. The Honda Civic Del Sol had a removable top which could be stowed in the trunk of the car and a generously sized rear window which could be retracted. The European and Japanese models of the Honda Civic Del Sol had a TransTop option. This was an electric mechanism which automatically retracted the targa top of the car at the flick of a button. The Honda Civic Del Sol came in S and Si trim levels. The S model Honda Civic Del Sol was the base model and was equipped with a 1.5 litre SOHC 4 cylinder 16 valve engine. The Si model had 1.6 litre VTEC SOHC 4 cylinder 16 valve engine. Although suffering from a few mechanical problems which mostly resulted from its targa configuration, the Honda Civic Del Sol was actually solid performer on the road. The car had decent speed and acceleration and was quite nimble as befitting its sporty image. Although not quite as good a seller as expected, the Honda Civic Del Sol is still a good quality car. Performance wise, there are few complaints to find in the Honda Civic Del Sol. About the only serious problem would be the potential of the car body to twist due to its targa layout. However, the effects are only minimal and do not come up often. The Honda Civic Del Sol also enjoys the usual solid mechanical performance of Honda. Owners of the Honda Civic Del Sol rarely sell off their units as the Honda Civic Del Sol is a fun and enjoyable ride. The car also enjoys ready availability of car parts.
