GM Daewoo Auto and Technology or GMDAT is a South Korean based motor company. It is a partner of GM in providing quality cars in various markets. They are known to make mini-cars and subcompact cars servicing various almost 140 countries all over the world. It has a manufacturing part in Korea and an assembly plant in Vietnam. Most of its designs, however, are assembled in China, Thailand, India and Colombia. In 2004 alone, it has sold more than 900,000 vehicles worldwide.
Daewoo was first established in the province of Incheon, South Korea specifically in Bupyeong-gu in 1937. However, it has had a change of name in 1962 to Saenara Motor. In 1965, it underwent another change of management as it was bought by Shinjin Industrial. By then, its new name is the Shinjin Motor that has close collaboration with Toyota. However, with their Asian partner’s withdrawal in 1972, making them decide for collaboration with the American company General Motors, under a new name General Motors Korea, which was later changed to Saehan Motor in 1976. In 1982, after Korean full control of the company, the name was again changed to Daewoo Motors. The early 1990’s saw the heavy expansion of the company in whole world reaching territories where motor giants have established their names. However, with two Asian financial crises happening back to back in 1997 and 1999, the company was almost squandering for help. Help came in the form General Motor’s buying out of most of Daewoo’s assets in 2001. This paved the way to the formation of GM Daewoo that officially started it operation in October 17, 2002. However, such purchase did not include the 15 plants including the one in Bupyeong-gu that Gm schedules to buy in 2008. Currently, GM owns 50.9% of GMDAT while Suzuki owns 11%. However, General Motors has expressed its desire to buy it.
The Kalos is the famed subcompact of the GM Daewoo, which is marketed internationally as the Chevrolet Aveo. It has two styling generations the T200 and the T20 and has been dedicated on platform sharing three body styles and five engine configurations. The Lacetti is its compact car available as a four-door sedan, a five-door hatchback or five-door station wagon varieties. The Winstorm is the crossover SUV based on the GM Theta platform.
Gm Daewoo plans to manufacture a model based on the Chevrolet T2X, which is a sport coupe–SUV concept car that has been predicted to join the models in 2008. Speculations are also lingering of various modifications on the Chevrolet Corsa B, Corsa C, and Corsa D platform.
With these much-talked about and heavily anticipated developments, the consumers are bound to expect a livelier and a more competitive arena in automobile market. Therefore, it much expected that the future of car developments and car models are not limited to what the eyes can see as of the moment. Hopefully, Daewoo and its entire sister companies will be there at the center to savor the fruits of success and years of work.Headlights by State: ______________________
