The Ford Country Squire was full-sized station wagon produced by the Ford Motor Company from 1950 until 1991. During this era, the station wagons were becoming a standard vehicle among Americans living in the suburban areas. Generally, this type of vehicle exhibited both recreational and utilitarian uses, and ultimately became a better and more convenient alternative to sedans. Naturally, it was then associated as a representation of family unity, activity, and intimacy outdoors. Postwar, middle-class families had a particularly strong demand for “woody” wagons that used to grace country estates, private schools, country clubs, and other upper class settings during the 1930’s. Ford’s solution to the growing demand was to replace the Custom Deluxe station wagon with the new Ford Country Squire. This full-size wagon, which can carry up to 8 passengers with its side-facing seat fitted in the cargo area became Ford’s premium station wagon. Like most of the Ford vehicles of that time, the Country Squire was equipped with a standard 95 hp 226 CID inline 6-cylinder or an optional 100 hp V8, both were flat-head engines. A 3-speed manual was the only available transmission. The wagon was made available in nine paint colors. Actual wood was used on the sides of this vehicle. The next year, Ford released two additional series of steel-bodied station wagons: the 2-door, six passenger Ranch wagon, the 4-door, eight passenger Country Sedan, and the 4-door, eight passenger Country Squire. The new station wagons were completely different from their predecessor in terms of structure and engine power. A grille replaced the single-spinner theme and the headlights were mounted in rings that projected from the fenders whereas the rear had round “jet-ray” taillights. Engine-wise the 2-door wagon boasted with 101 hp OHV 6, while the 4-doors were equipped with a 110 hp Strato-Star V8. 3-speed and overdrive wagons got new axle ratios which were higher than the other Fords. The year 1954 saw the demise of the flathead engines and was replaced by a “Y-block” V8 rated at 130 hp, while the Mileage Maker 6 was upped to 115 hp. Also, due to the demanding maintenance requirement of the king-pin front suspension was changed into the revolutionary ball-joint system and the wheelbase was extended. New features included an “Astral –Dial” speedometer on a restyled dashboard. In this year, Ford’s total sales were impressive with the station wagons being major contributors. By 1955, all Ford passenger cars were refurbished with sheetmetal, full wraparound windshield, aluminium grille, and hooded headlamps. The “Y-block” engine had a base power of 162 hp but soars up to a 182 hp upon installation of 4-barrel carburettor and dual exhaust. The following year, Ford began to add safety features which included padding for the sun visors and dash top and optional seat belts. Again, in 1957, all Ford cars underwent further facelifts to cope with the ever changing market. The wraparound windshield made use of a reverse-canted A-pillar as the glass area was enlarged to provide better visibility. The wheelbase was again extended, increasing load capacities for all station wagons. A wider, curved liftgate was used. In 1961, Ford used a tailgate assembly that used a self-storing window feature which could be either rolled down by a crank or an electrical motor using an interior switch or the key. And by 1966, Ford introduced the Magic Door Gate, which was then adopted by GM, Chrysler, and AMC in later years. In the late 1980’s the demand for full-size wagons was diminishing as Ford began restyling the full-size “Panther” platform. And instead of recreating a new bodystyle for the wagons, Ford redirected the market to the revamped Aerostar and Taurus. And finally, 1991 was the last year of production for the station wagons.
