The Mercury Comet was either a compact or a mid size car manufactured by Mercury. The Mercury Comet is an iconic vehicle and have generally sold quite well in the American car market. The Mercury Comet was first introduced in 1960 and was based on the compact Ford Falcon. Under the Mercury marque, the Mercury Comet received a more luxurious trim and a larger number of features than its Ford Falcon counterpart. The Mercury Comet was not intended to be sold under the Mercury car marque but was intended to be a car model under Edsel. The car received concurrent development with the Ford Falcon and therefore shares many similarities with the car. However, the demise of the Edsel car marque changed all that. At the start, the Mercury Comet was actually released only as the Comet. It did not carry any car marque. The Edsel heritage of the Mercury Comet is most prominently seen from early preproduction models of the car which carried the split grille design iconic to the Edsel marque. Production cars also had the elliptical tail lights which were Edsel icons. Soon, however, the Comet fell under the Mercury Marque and became known as the Mercury Comet. The early versions of the Mercury Comet are popularly known as the round body versions of the car. These versions of the Mercury Comet also shared a number of parts with the Mercury Meteor, a car model of Mercury which only received a short production period. The Mercury Comet has a long and storied carrier. Starting as a mid size vehicle carrying a conventional inline six engine with an output of 144 to 170 hp, the car was upgraded with a V8 engine capable of 260 hp. Though hardly competing with the muscle cars of the day, this began the conversion of the car into a muscle car. The first generation Mercury Comets with their rounded out bodies were soon replaced with the second generation Mercury Comets which featured more edges and a more muscle car profile and carried more powerful engines most notable available with the V8 engined versions which produced an output of either 260 or 280 hp. The third generation of the Mercury Comet featured a V8 engine which was capable of 390 hp, an almost 100 hp difference from its predecessors. The fourth generation Mercury Comet vehicles featured even more power with the singular I6 engine producing 250 hp and the V8 engines available with an output of either 302 hp, 351 hp or 428 hp. These fourth generation of the Mercury Comet were the 1968 to 1969 models of the car and are considered to be the true muscle car versions of the Mercury Comet. The next versions of the car featured an a lower power output until the car line was eventually discontinued in 1977. For second hand buyers, the appeal of the Mercury Comet is in its muscle car history. The car models of the Mercury Comet which which offered the best muscle car profile would be the 1966 to 1969 models, with the later models being better choices. Related Bookmarks
