This was due to the need for more fuel efficient car models forced on Mercury by the fuel scarcity resulting from the 1970s fuel embargo in the Middle East. The 1979 to 1991 Mercury Colony Park featured a 5.0 litre V8 engine which produced a total output of 150 hp. The transmission available for the car was a 4 speed automatic. On the road, the Mercury Colony Park produced moderate acceleration even with the V8 engine. This was primarily due to the heavy weight of the car and the low power output of the engine.
