Among the various brands of automobiles under the wingspan of General Motors Corporation, the largest selling company is Chevrolet. To some, this famed brand is just Chevy. This brand has taken the whole world by storm making GMC almost synonymous to Chevrolet or Chevy. As of date, they currently have more than twenty cars out in the market with redesigned, re-engineered and enhanced versions. They are focused on manufacturing subcompact cars to medium duty commercial trucks. Since its inception in 1911, the company that is based in Detroit, Michigan has gone a long way raising its popularity even more.
The company was co-founded by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant in 1910 after Durant was forced out of the company he founded, the General Motors. Both men have had a solid relationship after Durant tapped Chevrolet, then a racecar driver, to use the Buick brands in the races he would attend. Thus, the name Chevrolet was used as a means for Durant to build his own reputation in the automobile manufacturing industry. The bow tie logo has been in used since 1913 as a stylized version of the flag of Switzerland where the racecar driver and founder was born. It was also believed to have been a product of Durant’s version of wallpaper he has seen in a French hotel while touring abroad. In 1915, while Durant was on a trip to Toronto, he searched for possibilities of building a manufacturing facility in Canada. He then talked to Colonel Sam McLaughlin of the McLaughlin Motor Company to merge his company with Chevy turning into the Chevrolet Car Company of Canada. They were the designated manufacturer of Chevy is Canada. After two years, GM bought the two Canadian brands to comprise the General Motors of Canada Ltd. By 1916, Chevy was able to gather enough resources and profits to allow Durant to buy most of the shares of GMC. Later on, he was then instituted as the president of the General Motors Company. This allowed Chevy to have leeway and become a separate the division of GMC. The 1918 model year saw the introduction of the Model D: a V8-powered model in 4-passenger roadster and 5-passenger tourer models. During the 1950’s and 1960’s Chevy was a big factor that influenced the shaping of the automobile industry. In fact, in 1963, 1 out 10 cars sold in the United States was a Chevy. Through the years, they have maintained small-block V-8 design up to the present.
The famous Chevrolet cars include the Impala, the Corvair, and the Silverado. The luxurious and spacious Impala has been in existence since 1958 and its current model, a large car variety, is the number one selling car with a domestic nameplate in the United States. On the other hand, the Silverado full-sized pick up trucks is the second largest selling vehicle in the whole US.
Chevrolet seeks to add intriguing features to its futures cars. It will have an overhaul of the Malibu designs well as a reintroduction of the Camaro concept pony car set to be released in 2009. Its latest model is the 2009 Corvette ZR1 sports car.
Chevrolet has consistently been a popular brand in most areas they service. Like most GMC brands, it will continuously manufacture cars with sleek designs, utmost comfort and high-performance.
