The Cadillac Catera was released as an entry level Cadillac and was sold from 1997 to 2001. It was marketed in the North American car markets as well as other car markets around the world. The Catera filled the gap that was left when the Fleetwood line of Cadillacs were discontinued. It was to be the third sedan in the Cadillac lineup. The Cadillac Catera was a dismal failure and was discontinued after a four year run.
One of the biggest selling points that Cadillac pushed about the Catera was European style handling and the car generally delivered on this promise. However, the Cadillac Catera still failed in the marketplace. The traditional Cadillac buyer found the car to be too small for their tastes while the European car buyers, one of the major target markets of the Cadillac Catera were unimpressed with the car. Many factors had been named for the market failure of the Cadillac Catera. One of these is the marketing campaign that was run for the Catera. The ad campaigns for the Cadillac Catera even featured supermodel Cindy Crawford. However, it was so misinformed that the car became a target for ridicule. Many also consider that the failure of the Cadillac Catera may have been part of the fallout from the disaster that was the Cadillac Cimarron. A more concrete reason of the failure of the Cadillac Catera was the many reliability issues that the car had.
The Cadillac Catera was smaller and less powerful than other Cadillac models at the time of its release. The car was powered with a 54° L81 V6 engine which delivered 200 hp, unique among Cadillacs at the time. The Cadillac Catera was based largely on the German made Opel Omega MV6. The transmission was a four speed automatic. On its first release, the Cadillac Catera was prone to several reliability issues. The "autobahn" oriented alignment specs of the Cadillac Catera led to tire wear issues. There were also many engine failures for the car, enough so that GM eventually offered a recall for the car. Along with the disappointing marketing of the Cadillac Catera, this led to the demise of the car which was discontinued by 2001.
Given the bad press that the Cadillac Catera received, it can be expected that the car has very little market value when resold. For those who are planning to buy this car, there are better choices available out there. The Cadillac Catera had plenty of problems. Aside from bad press, the car has been well known to be unreliable. Some car enthusiasts suggest that the later models of the Cadillac Catera were much improved. Still, there are far better car models out there.Headlights by State: ______________________
