The Pontiac Catalina was a line of car models in the full size segment of the line up of cars of Pontiac. Throughout most of its production period, the Pontiac Catalina was sold as the entry level full sized car of Pontiac. Sales for the car were quite good until its production end. Originally, the Catalina name was used as a marque for hardtop body styles in several car model lines of Pontiac. The first use of the Catalina name was for the hardtop version of the 1950 Chieftain Series 25/27 which was the top of the line model of Pontiac at the time. From 1950 up to 1958, the hardtop car models made by Pontiac were given the Catalina name. The only exception to this rule was the 1958 Pontiac Bonneville. In 1959, the Chieftain car model name was dropped and the entry level model of the car was given the Pontiac Catalina name. The top of the line Star Chief car model was dropped to mid line status while the Pontiac Bonneville became the flagship series which featured a full lineup of car body models. The Pontiac Catalina was sold in several body styles. Pontiac focused its advertising efforts on the higher trim level four door and two door hardtop versions, the convertible versions and the station wagon version called the Safari. However, the main seller of the Pontiac Catalina car line was actually the four door sedan. As the lowest priced Pontiac full size car model, the Pontiac Catalina was still a substantial vehicle and was almost level with the Oldsmobile 88 and the Buick LeSabre in terms of trim and features. Its price tag was lower than the two cars as well. The Pontiac Catalina continued to be sold as the entry level full size car model of Pontiac until, in 1977, the divisions of GM, including Pontiac, went through a radical downsizing of their full sized car models in order the lessen the weight of the cars and improve its fuel consumption profile. The Pontiac Catalina was discontinued in 1981 as Pontiac began to abandon its full size car market segment. Throughout its production period, the Pontiac Catalina was based on the B-body platform of General Motors. It was available in several car body styles including a four door sedan, a convertible, a station wagon, a four door hardtop and a two door hardtop. The engine used for the car was a 389 cubic inch V8 engine. By its last generation period, car model years 1977 to 1981, the Pontiac Catalina was available as a station wagon, a sedan and as a coupe. There were several engines available for the car including a 231 cubic inch V6 Buick engine, 256 cubic inch V8 Pontiac engine, a 301 cubic inch V8 Pontiac engine, a 350 cubic inch V8 Pontiac engine and a 400 cubic inch V8 Pontiac engine. The available transmissions for the Pontiac Catalina were a THM200 3 speed transmission and the THM200-4R 4 speed transmission. The earlier models of the Pontiac Catalina are now classic car models. Later models are generally available in the second hand car market, though they are not easy to come by. . Headlights by State: ______________________
