The Mercury Capri is a car name that has been used by Mercury over several car models for several years. These cars were released in differing classes and, depending on the model year, the Mercury Capri was either a pony car or a roadster.
The first car named Mercury Capri actually came from Ford. The car was developed by Ford Europe and was named the Ford Capri. On release, it was termed by many as the 'baby Mustang'. For the American car market, the Ford Capri was imported from Cologne, Germany and was named simply as the Capri. It was not badged under any car maker and only carried the car name 'Capri'. Since Ford already had a Mustang entry in the same class, many people referred to the Capri as the Mercury Capri. This version of the Mercury Capri was sold from 1970 up to 1977. In 1979, the Mercury Capri being sold was based on the Ford Mustang. Thus, it is the first pony car available from Mercury since the Mercury Cougar was increased in size and moved up from the pony car market. This version of the Mercury Capri was based on the Ford Fox platform, the platform used for the 1979 to 1993 versions of the Mustang. Since its release up to its discontinuation in 1986, the Mercury Capri maintained its similarity with the Ford Mustang. In 1989, Ford Australia created Ford Capri, a roadster which was largely based on the mechanical construction of the Mazda 323 and competing the Mazda Miata. This version of the Ford Capri was a roadster which was soon exported to the American market in 1991. The Mercury Capri proved to be a solid car and the Ford Capri version in Australia is a common daily driver in that country. In the American car market, it is overshadowed by the Mazda Miata, a comparable vehicle which the Mercury Capri might have competed actively with had it arrived in the market sooner.
There are at least three versions of the Mercury Capri. The latest version is the Mazda Miata competitor, the 1991 to 1994 Mercury Capri. The 1991 to 1994 Mercury Capri featured several components taken from the early Mazda 323 vehicle. The base model of the 1991 to 1994 Mercury Capri featured a dual cam 4 cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.6 litres and an output of 100hp. Another version of the car featured a turbocharger which raised the power output of the car to 132 hp. The standard transmission available was a 5 speed manual transmission and an optional 4 speed automatic transmission was also available. Standard safety equipment include a driver side airbag, all disc brakes, fully independent suspension system and power steering. There was also an option for a lift off steel hardtop which featured interior lights and rear window defrosters.
The Mercury Capri line of cars are fast becoming popular, especially the earlier versions of the car. The later version is also a good vehicle primarily due to its reliability and its roadster profile, though outdated. For car buyers looking for affordable daily drivers, the Mercury Capri is a good choice. Headlights by State: ______________________
