The GMC Canyon is a compact mid-size pickup from General Motors Corporation that is great for use in hauling and towing services that were only available for full-size pickups. Smaller pickups are more fuel-efficient than their larger ones. Of all its mid-size counterparts, the Canyon boasts its several choices of suspension setups for normal and off-road or sporty driving. Its built is a handsome-looking truck showing off its broad shoulder and square jaw. This sturdy construction had passed several crash tests with satisfying high scores.
The GMC Canyon was first introduced in 2004 sharing the same platform and features with its twin model, the Chevrolet Colorado. Since its launching, the Canyon had experienced few modifications in its transmissions and engines. Most of these changes were also experienced by the Colorado. Even with these changes, the Canyon is still in its first generation. The original Canyon was launched using the 2.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 175-hp and the 3.5-liter inline 5-cylinder engine that only produces 220 hp. Increased power and better control for the Canyon was first realized in 2006 with its engine upgrades, introduction of the ZQ8 package, and the revision of the four-speed automatic transmission in 2007 model.
The interior space and the comfort that the Canyon gives match those of the full-size pickup while keeping the same fuel efficiency of the mid-size. The Canyon is available in three unique body styles—the regular cab, the extended cab, and the crew cab in both the two- and four-wheel drive models. The crew cab and the extended cab are 4-door models that are more spacious than the regular cab. The 60/40-split-folding seat at the rear passenger compartment can accommodate three passengers. Hauling loads is not a problem with the availability of jump seats and 2 reverse opening doors in the rear panel of the extended cab that can haul loads in its 5-foot bed (6ft for the two others). Aside from the three body styles, the GMC Canyons also have three different trim levels namely the WT, SL, and SLE. All these trims are available for the regular and extended cabs and the crew cabs are only available in the SLE trim. The three trims differ only in the levels of their features such as the cruise control, air-conditioning unit, AM/FM stereo, interior upholstery, and their safety features. The safety features of the Canyon include 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, ignition disable, and the standard front airbags and optional curtain airbags. The engines used in the latest Canyon models are the much improved 185-hp 2.9-liter 4-cylinder for 2WD and the 242-hp 3.7-liter 5-cylinder engine for the 4WD. The 4-cylinder engines are available in either the manual 5-speed or automatic 4-speed transmissions. The 5-cylinder powered Canyons are only available with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
The GMC Canyon is very efficient when it comes to fuel consumption. This mid-size pickup is also spacious and roomy for hauling a number of loads, but this pickup truck seems lacking in power when hauling heavy loads. Though the current Canyon models are equipped with upgraded engines they can’t still keep its pace with the power of its counterparts like the Toyota Tacoma and the Nissan Frontier. But those budget-conscious truck buyers who are looking for a stylish and spacious pickup can go with this affordable GMC Canyon.
