Cadillac is another division of General Motors Corporation engaged in the manufacturing of prestigious and luxury cars. They are in charge of making the most expensive cars catering to the rich and famous. The company started its operation in 1902 and has expanded its market to more than fifty countries and territories now all over the world. Majority of its sales happens in the North American countries of United States and Canada. They are famed for their slogan of “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit” because it is in reference to the indisputable rights as constituted in the Declaration of Independence.
Cadillac started from the ashes of a once Henry Ford Company. When he decided to leave, the company’s financial supporters have no choice but liquidate its assets so they decided to hire the services of Henry M. Leland. Leland, instead of looking for buyers, persuaded William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen to continue making cars in the form of Mr. Leland’s established 1-cylinder engine. On August 22, 1902, the new name of the company was the Cadillac Automobile Company after the Founder of Detroit: the Frenchman Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac. Their first car was produced in October of 1902 and it was known as the 10 hp Cadillac. In 1909, General Motors bought the whole company. After 3 years, they managed to release the first car with an electric starter. By 1917, it was a popular car used by the US military. In1926, the company released a shatter-resistant safety glass. A year after, they have hired an actual designer to design the body of their car instead of an engineer thereby giving in to the clamor of the public towards good-looking vehicles yet maintaining the optimum performance of their vehicles. However, in 1932, the sales of its vehicles spiraled downwards due to negative publicities of being anti-black. In a last ditch effort to counter its decreasing popularity, the President Mr. Nicholas Dreystadt proposed a campaign to sell the brand to black consumers. He was given 18 months to get it done else, the division will be dissolved. 1940 saw the rise of car sales to ten folds. With renewed popularity, they have started to offer automatic transmission in their first luxury car nameplate in 1941. Another slump in sales came in the late 1970’s to early 1980’s after two energy crises that badly hit the automobile sector. Sales continued to decrease when an archrival automobile company ridiculed it in its commercials. In 1987, with renewed spirit and very new marketing strategies, they have produced the Allante that was the biggest threat to imported cars. The next years saw the rise of smaller and downsized cars that performed as well as their older brothers. In 1998, the Escalade, the company’s first Sports Utility Vehicle, was introduced as a 1999 model. This was the start of a very good year as well excellent succeeding years for the company.
Throughout history, the most significant Cadillac cars are the Allante, Eldorado and the Escalade. This two cars help rebuild what was then a company on the brink of dissolution. The Escalade is their first SUV and currently has three variants including a pick-up. Allante, although has stopped its production, is still one of the most popular models especially in the late 1980’s to early 1990’s.
Cadillac has not succumbed to the trend of reviving retro cars. However, they are pushing for a model with hybrid features by 2009 as predicted by Bob Lutz, the Vice Chairman of General Motors.
