GMC Caballero Headlights: Find Your Replacement Caballero Headlight Assembly

Retro or classic cars are more enjoyable and pleasurable to ride. Riding in one of these cars catches all the attention of the motorists and the pedestrians alike. One of the head turning classic vehicles that looked more like a coupe than a pickup is the GMC Caballero.

The GMC Caballero is a coupe pickup offered by the GMC Truck in Canada and United States. This vehicle stayed in the production line from 1978 to 1987. The Caballero is another GMC’s version of the Chevrolet El Camino being the Sprint (made in 1971-1977) as the other version and the predecessor of the Caballero. The Caballero replaced the Sprint after redesigning the line and other vehicles that are using the A platform. The original rear-drive A platform was changed to a front-wheel drive for the 1982 model retaining the name and giving the name G platform to the old rear-drive. The GMC used the Spanish name Caballero to match the Spanish name of its Chevrolet counterpart, the El Camino that was taken from “El Camino Real” meaning King’s Road. The Trim packages of the Caballero are also using Spanish names such as the Laredo (1978-1979), Amarillo (1980-1987), and Diablo (1978-1987). All these three shared almost the same trim designs with light variations that are more noticeable in their decal at the tailgate.

The Caballero and El Camino share almost the same features from outside to the inside. The only differences are the trim variations and the nameplates used by the two vehicles making it difficult to distinguish from one another. These common features had affected the popularity and sales of the Caballero. Being the first to come out, the El Camino experienced good sales shadowing the Caballero and many people never knew that Caballero ever existed even when they saw one that they usually mistakenly referred to as the El Camino. The two twin coupe pickups that are literally “identical twins” used the same parts that are used in the Chevrolet Malibu series but only in longer wheelbase. Since its initial production in 1978 until its cease in production in 1987, the Caballero has preserved its exterior designs in all its models. The only changes made were in the front grille design that was originally styled as an “eggcrate” in 1978 and changed to horizontal bars in 1979 and 1981 and vertical bars in 1980. The final design used in 1982 to 1987 was the full-width grille with four-row crosshatch pattern that housed the four headlights. The interiors of the Caballero have either a bench seat or bucket seats with center console near the floor-mounted shifter. In the auto-transmission models, the shifter was placed near the steering column. The V6 or V8 that use gasoline as fuels powered most of the original Caballero models. These are the same engines used by the Caballero’s G platform relatives. The Chevrolet’s V6 such as 3.3, 3.8, and 4.3-liter are the common options for the Caballero. The Buick V6 was also used in 1978-1979 models for some areas and became a standard in 1978 to 1985 in California trucks. The V8 engines used are the 4.4, 5.0, and the 5.7-liter engine. The diesel-fueled Oldsmobile V8 was also used in some Caballero models. The transmissions used range from the 3-speed or 4-speed manual to the 3-speed automatic. In 1980s the 4-speed automatic that has an overdrive took over the 3-speed and the manual transmissions were discontinued.

The Caballero, although failed to match the El Camino in sales during their time can match the latter in terms of performance because of their same design and features. The classic car collectors and the lovers of El Camino can greatly appreciate the beauty and performance of the retro and very rare Caballero.
