The Volvo C70 was a ground breaking car for Volvo in many ways. It was Volvo's first modern convertible and was considerably different from its convertible predecessors. The C70's design was also a departure from Volvo's classic boxy, rectilinear look. The Volvo C70 appeared like more conventional and modern cars, streamlined to perfection and built to appeal to people who wanted a vehicle that provided style, maximum performance, and faultless road-holding and driving without compromising comfort and safety. Thus, the Volvo C70 was created for the said market where it was warmly received.

The first generation Volvo C70 was introduced in 1996. It had both low and high pressure 2.3 or 2.4 5-cylinder turbo charged petrol engines, and 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions. The C70 was a four-seater and had impressive features such as an electrically-heated glass rear window, automatic or pop-up roll over hoops, boron steel reinforced A-pillers, seat-belt pre-tensioners, front and side air bags, and an innovative safety cage around the passenger compartment. The cloth convertible top was offered in four colors and can be operated by a single dashboard mounted button. Special edition first generation C70s featured two-tone leather interiors, SC-901 Dolby Pro Logic I stereo with 3-disc integrated changer unit, 500 watts of power and 12 high end Dynaud speakers. Like most modern convertibles, the Volvo C70 was also plagued by the problem of having poor rear visibility and pronounced skuttle shake.

The second generation C70 model was unveiled to the public in April 2006. It shared the same platform as the Volvo P1. This C70 model was different because it was now a 2-door coupe convertible and had a three-piece retractable hardtop. Two engine types were available for the second generation C70, which were the 2.4L 125 kW Five-cylinder and the 2.5 L 162kW Five-cylinder. Both were normally-aspirated gasoline engines with changeable turbochargers and common-rail direct injection. Transmission types for this model were 5-speed automatic and 6-speed manual. Aside from the change to a coupe convertible, the C70 also provided more safety measures. In fact, it was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States. New safety features included door-mounted side impact protection inflatables and a stiff curtain with 2 rows of slats and which deflates should the car roll over. The retractable hardtop roof was also equipped with a ROPS or roll over protection structure.

Volvo Cars' gamble to get rid of its boxy design and employ more safety specific features paid off. The car was well received by the public. The spacious interior and comfortable seats were also vastly appreciated. Volvo's reputation in making cars that were reliable also helped boost sales. For the discerning buyer who wants to be guaranteed a car that performs perfectly, and is also very eye-catching, then the Volvo C70 is for them. Be assured of a smooth, comfortable ride in a car that is both stylish and easy to maintain.
