Mercury Bobcat Headlights: Find Your Replacement Bobcat Headlight Assembly

The Mercury Bobcat was a subcompact vehicle sold by Mercury, a Ford car division. The Mercury Bobcat sold poorly during its release years.

During the mid 1970s, American car makers were getting hit by the increasing price of fuel due to the Middle East oil embargo. The Mercury car company which traditionally made large, gas guzzling cars, were left without any competing subcompact in the emerging subcompact market. Fortunately, Ford already had the Ford Pinto on the subcompact market and the car was doing well against the subcompact imports of the time which were establishing themselves as the market leaders in the subcompact car class. In order to enter the subcompact car category, Mercury took the Ford Pint, introduced minor changes to the car and released it rebadged as the Mercury Bobcat. The Mercury Bobcat was just another rebadged model of the 1970s lineup of cars from Mercury which was replete with rebadged Ford car models. Car buyers were quick to notice the similarity of the Mercury Bobcat to the Ford Pinto and, combined with the higher price tag of the Mercury Bobcat, they stayed away. Although Mercury did deign to notice the subcompact car market by releasing the Mercury Bobcat in 1975, their main focus was in the mid size to full size car markets and the Mercury Bobcat was virtually left to fend for its own. Needless to say, the sales of the Mercury Bobcat were hardly impressive as car buyers preferred the more affordable Ford Pinto which was virtually its twin in any case.

The Mercury Bobcat was not a new car but was a rebadged version of the Ford Pinto. Aside from minimal design differences, the Mercury Bobcat was basically the same car as the Ford Pinto. The car was available in several body styles, from a two door coupe to a three door hatchback to a two door station wagon. The body of the Mercury Bobcat was a class typical unibody construction and featured an engine which was longitudinally mounted at the front of the car driving the rear wheels. The engines of the Mercury Bobcat were typical I4 engines with displacements ranging from 1.6 litres to 2.3 litres throughout its production period. The Mercury Bobcat, along with the Ford Pinto and other Ford Pinto car models, were involved in a major lawsuit due to the fact that the car was liable to burning or exploding in the case of a rear end collision. The lack of proper protection exposed the gas tank of the car to rupturing in such a collision. Furthermore, the doors of the car were also shown to crumple and prevent the passengers from exiting in the case of a collision. Deaths were reported in several cases.

The Mercury Bobcat was a failure in the car markets and rightly so. Basically a rebadged version of the Ford Pinto, there was little attraction in buying the car during its years of release. Its doubtful safety record is a hard to ignore black mark. There are definitely better alternatives to this car.
