Lincoln, the luxury division of the Ford Motor Company, created a luxury pickup truck in 2002 called the Lincoln Blackwood. The truck proved to be a market failure and was only available in 2002. The Lincoln Blackwood was set to be the first luxury pickup truck and was first shown to the public by Lincoln during the North American International Auto Show of 1999. The Lincoln Blackwiid was based on the highly successful Ford F-150 Crew Cab truck, though it featured a more richer and luxurious trim. The Lincoln Blackwood received a lot of praise during its introduction and Lincoln decided to pursue production for the truck which was eventually released in 2002. The Lincoln Blackwood proved to be a market failure and sold poorly in the car markets. The production period of the Lincoln Blackwood lasted all of 15 months. Most observers cited the lack of options of the Lincoln Blackwood for its market failure. Also the Lincoln Blackwood proved to be too luxurious and was practically useless compared to other pickup trucks which were very much of a utilitarian nature. Thus the Lincoln Blackwood was immediately discontinued, being available in the American car market in 2002 though it was sold in Mexico for 2002 and 2003. The Lincoln Blackwood was a luxury pickup truck, through and through, which may have spelled its demise. The engine of the truck was an impressively powerful 5.4 litre V8 engine which had an output of 300hp and was connected to a 4 speed automatic transmission. The truck had a front engine rear wheel drive setup. The Lincoln Blackwood, true to its name, came only with a interiors and exteriors trimmed in black. The truck bed of the Lincoln Blackwood was remade into a trunk which featured plush carpeting and a power tonneau. The box used on the bed was made using plastic composites. However, linings of stainless steel were also applied on it. The exterior of the truck bed had pinstripes was made of artificial burled black wood and had aluminum 'pinstripes'. This, along with the lack of a four wheel drive option, made the Lincoln Blackwood a highly impractical pickup truck which explained its low market impact. The standard features of the Lincoln Blackwood included traction control, front side airbags, 4 wheel disc brakes with antilock feature, heated front seats, power adjustable foot pedals and a system for rear obstacle detection and warning. There was only one optional feature for the Lincoln Blackwood which was a navigation system. On the road, the Lincoln Blackwood had lively acceleration from a full stop but loses its edge when it gets to midrange speeds. The automatic transmission of the Lincoln Blackwood was quit responsive and smooth acting. The suspension is that of a big truck, heavy and ponderous. The handling of the Lincoln Blackwood was responsive though it was far from agile. Turns developed surprisingly acceptable body lean. Fuel consumption is big truck inefficient. The Lincoln Blackwood is an overdone, gas guzzling truck which was rightfully pulled out of production in a single year. There might be some who would be interested in a luxury pickup truck which has lost the primary strong point of a pickup truck, the truck bed. For those of a more practical mind, avoid this truck at all costs. . Headlights by State: ______________________
