The Isuzu Axiom is a car styled mid size SUV made by Isuzu from 2002 up to 2004. The Isuzu Axiom had a unique external design which gave the SUV the sleek lines of a sedan with the aggressive stance of an SUV. The Isuzu Axiom performed poorly in the car market and was ultimately discontinued after only three years of production.
The Isuzu Axiom featured an interesting blend of car like styling and SUV capabilities. The SUV was first introduced in 2002 and featured the so-called "knife blade" theme for its design. The car was designed in Japan and was built in the Subaru-Isuzu Indiana plant in the US. The SUV was suitably powered, featuring a V6 engine. The Isuzu Axiom was also based on the Rodeo platform. The unconventional styling of the Isuzu Axiom was one of the hallmarks of the vehicle. Unfortunately, many car enthusiasts found the design of the Isuzu Axiom to be too strange and the car suffered for it. Ironically a lot of the design cues of the Isuzu Axiom became commonplace in the design of many later SUVs. The fact that the Isuzu Axiom was based on the aging Rodeo platform also did not endear it to SUV car buyers. Isuzu also offered the Isuzu Axiom as a luxury entry which resulted in the Isuzu Axiom being available only to a limited market. Overall sales of the Isuzu Axiom was quite low. The lack of market enthusiasm for the design of the Axiom, its already aging platform which proved to be unstable and Isuzu's insistence in placing the Axiom in the luxury SUV market hurt the sales of the Isuzu Axiom and the SUV was ultimately discontinued in 2004.
The Isuzu Axiom featured a 3.5 litre V6 engine capable of an output of 230 hp. The engine was later improved with direct injection and the output was raised to 250 hp. The Isuzu Axiom also featured a 4 wheel drive with Torque On Demand system as an option from the basic rear wheel drive system. Transmission was only available with a 4 speed automatic. Performance wise, the Isuzu shared a lot of traits with the Isuzu Rodeo. This is most noticeable with the steering of the Isuzu Axiom which is too lively and uneven. The Isuzu Axiom is quite prone to body lean and the suspension is quite lively as well. Comfort and cabin space is also quite below standards for its class.
There is little value in buying an Isuzu Axiom. While the SUV is powerful enough, it is built on an unstable platform. The features of the SUV are also not up to par and the overall market value of the Axiom is quite low. For those who are considering the Isuzu Axiom, there are more deserving SUVs available, even in the second hand markets.Headlights by State: ______________________
