A competitor in the mid size sport utility vehicle market, the Lincoln Aviator was made by the Ford Motor Company under its Lincoln luxury vehicle division. The Lincoln Aviator performed poorly in the car markets and was discontinued after a short two year run. The Lincoln Aviator was entered by Lincoln in the mid size sport utility vehicle market in the United States. The SUV was first introduced in 2003 and was discontinued in 2005, a mere two year production run. The Lincoln Aviator was based on the Ford Explorer however, Lincoln used several design cues from the Lincoln Navigator. The design relationship between the Lincoln Aviator and the Lincoln Navigator was played by Lincoln through clever advertising campaigns which stated : 'Imitation is the sincerest form if flattery. Especially when it's yourself your imitating'. Upon release, the Lincoln Aviator received a lot of positive coverage from the press. However, the Lincoln Aviator proved to be a poor market performer. Some of the criticisms of the Lincoln Aviator was its design did not present anything new and exciting and was just copying from several successful Ford models. Its price was also a limiting factor in that the Lincoln Aviator had a price range similar to larger, more luxurious mid size sport utility vehicles. Whatever the reason for its failure, the Lincoln Aviator was discontinued in 2005. According to reports, the Lincoln Aviator was to be revived after 2006 but that has not materialised. The Lincoln Aviator was replaced by the less powerful Lincoln MKX crossover SUV. The Lincoln Aviator was based on the Ford Explorer and shares many mechanical components with the vehicle. The Lincoln Aviator had a DOHC Modular 4.6 litre V8 engine under the hood which was capable of an output of 302 hp. The transmission of the Lincoln Aviator was a 5 speed automatic which was available with either a rear wheel drive or a four wheel drive system. Standard equipment for the Lincoln Aviator included curtain side airbags, rear obstacle detection, power adjustable pedals, dual zone climate system which had a rear control system, antiskid traction control system and folding third row bench seats. Optional features available for the Lincoln Aviator included a sunroof, a navigation system, 3 passenger second row bench seats which increased the passenger seating capacity of the Lincoln Aviator to seven and a rear DVD entertainment system. On the road, the V8 engine of the Linconln Aviator gave it a lot of power to play with which was quickly sapped by the heavy weight of the Lincoln Aviator. Suspension was pleasantly smooth even on bumpy roads. Still, the experience was more akin to a truck than a sedan. Handling was quite acceptable with solid footing on the road which was impressive for an SUV. The Lincoln Aviator took a big hit in fuel economy which was average to below average in its vehicle class. The Lincoln Aviator was a solid performing vehicle which did not get its chance to shine. For a second hand mid size sport utility vehicle purchase, the Lincoln Aviator would make a convincing buy were it not for its abysmal fuel economy. With the high price of fuel nowadays, this vehicle is not a very good investment at all. . Headlights by State: ______________________
