The Pontiac Astre was a subcompact vehicle sold by the Pontiac division of General Motors. Sales for the car were relatively good.
The Pontiac Astre was a rebadged version of the Chevrolet Vega. It was part of the efforts of the major American car makers, GM, Ford and Chrysler, to enter the emerging subcompact car segment in order to compete successfully with the market leaders at the time which were mostly imports from Japanese car makers Datsun, Honda and Toyota and the Volkswagen Beetle. The Pontiac Astre actually featured a unibody construction, a conventional four cylinder engine and a rear wheel drive layout which was very similar to Japanese subcompact vehicles. During the early years of its release, the Pontiac Astre, along with the Chevrolet Vega, suffered from several reliability issues. These included engine overheating, fires from the carburetor and premature rusting of body parts among others. These hurt the market perception of the car greatly. The production of the Pontiac Astre and the Chevrolet Vega was also hurt by the labor strike of its production plant in Lordstown, Ohio in 1972 which lasted for three weeks. The Pontiac Astre was plagued by several problems and, to combat the lowering perception of the car, many internal improvements were introduced to the engine of the later models of the car. The car was also offered with an impressive warrant which was unprecedented at the time.
However, these proved to be too little of an effort to salvage the reputation of the car and the Pontiac Astre, along with the Chevrolet Vega became well known as failures both in the market and as engineering efforts. The car was listed as one of the worst cars of all time in the Forbes Magazine. Even so the Pontiac Astre still has some admirers and collector clubs for both the Pontiac Astre and the Chevrolet Vega are quite popular. Interestingly poor durability of the four cylinder engine of the Pontiac Astre and the Chevrolet Vega, one of its weakest points, became one of the car's features which led to the popularity of the car for hot rod modifications. The other two reasons were its light weight and relatively low cost. One of the most popular modifications made for the car were the installation of either a big block or a small block Chevy V8 engine which, most modders found out, fit very well in the engine compartment of the car.
The Pontiac Astre subcompact car was available in several body styles. These were a 2 door coupe, a 2 door station wagon and a 3 door hatchback car body. The Pontiac Astre was built on the H body platform of General Motors and had a front engine rear wheel drive layout. Several engines were available for the car. This included a Cosworth 122 cubic inch I4 engine, an Iron Duke 151 cubic inch I4 engine and a 2300 140 cubic inch I4 engine. The available transmissions for the Pontiac Astre were a three speed manual transmission, a four speed manual transmission, a 5 speed manual transmission, a 2 speed manual transmission and a 3 speed manual transmission.
For a regular car owner, the Pontiac Astre has little appeal and a lot of potential problems. Its better to give this one a miss if you are looking for an affordable daily driver. Headlights by State: ______________________
