The year 1976 is a highly remembered production date to Dodge, a division of the major automaker Chrysler. It was the birth year of Dodge Aspen, a major player in the compact class of the industry. It first came out as 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, and station wagon that is totally unique for this segment. Early after its release, 1976 to be exact, Aspen together with its re-badged sibling Plymouth Volare were collectively named in the prestigious Motor trends as ‘Car of the Year’. The two had been very popular in those days for the glamorous advertisements they received with endorsers Rex Harrison for Aspen and Sergio Franchi for Volare.
Both models were in the industry for 5 model years, gathering more and more admirers and sales as the years amassed. Its featured F body is well engineered for its applications and assumed performance. Though the automakers acknowledged that these models were rushed to the market so soon that the 1976 buyers were the actual testers of its reliability and performance. In this effect, and even if its second year in the industry it was declared quality-wise, many of the 1976 Dodge Aspen were recalled for minor revisions and polishing. One significant reason for doing so is the premature rusting of its fenders.
Most 1976 Dodge Aspen releases got new fenders and painted in monochromatic effect. These fenders were basically polyethylene or plastic to solve the problems in rusting. The entire body welcomed the more reliable and durable galvanized sheet metal along with the new plastic full inner fenders. It was a different story for the wagon trims of Aspen, which featured lift gates with fixed rear windows and simulated woodgrain trim on the exterior. This simulated trim was framed in blond, painted metal wood-look trim. Another significant feature of Aspen’s wagon is its badge and unique grille.
Dodge Aspen is one of Chrysler’s models in this division that received so much fanfare and high sales right in its debut year. Although there were slight troubles right after that, it still remained best value for its owners and users. What impacted so much in its consumers is the great performance it showed over early ownership. This and the elegant appearance it inherited from its makers and designers were the main reasons for its 5-year production successes. To date, Aspens are still racing on roads and streets with the useful modifications implied on it. Headlights by State: ______________________
