The Isuzu Ascender is an SUV car model offering of Isuzu. The Ascender is available as either a mid size or a full size SUV. The Isuzu Ascender was first introduced in 2003 and is due for discontinuation in 2009.
The Isuzu Ascender is actually a rebadged version of the GMC Envoy. The Isuzu car company is actually partially owned by GM up until 2006. The Isuzu Ascender replaced the Isuzu Trooper which was a Japanese made car model. Originally available as 7 passenger full size SUV, a scaled down 5 passenger mid size SUV Isuzu Ascender was introduced as a 2005 model, replacing the Isuzu Rodeo and Axiom. In 2006, the full size SUV Isuzu Ascender was removed from the market with the V8 engine removed as an option for the Ascender. The remaining Isuzu Ascender is the mid level SUV and this model has also been scheduled for removal from the car market by 2009. This is in tune with the planned withdrawal of the Isuzu car company from the United States car market.
The latest version of the Isuzu Ascender is available only with an LL8 4.2 litre I6 engine capable of 285 hp. The transmission for the SUV is only available as a 4 speed automatic. This model Isuzu Ascender is only available as a mid size, 5 passenger SUV. The older versions of the Isuzu Ascender was available as both a 7 passenger and a 5 passenger SUV. Aside from the engine option of the latest Isuzu Ascender, the earlier models of the Isuzu Ascender was also available with a V8 5.3 litre engine. Another option was the same V8 engine with a Displacement on Demand system which significantly reduced the fuel consumption of the SUV. The latest version of the Isuzu Ascender has excellent acceleration and large reserves of power. It is one of the top SUVs in terms of towing capabilities. Handling for the Ascender is, unfortunately a bit handicapped. Body lean is quite noticeable and the vehicle can be easily over steered and often requires correction at highway speeds. The suspension of the Ascender can take most bumps at reasonable speeds. At higher speeds, the vehicle is prone to jittering when it hits rough spots. Fuel efficiency is also on the low side even for a vehicle of its class.
The Isuzu Ascender is a solid performing SUV. Although not topping its class, the car is reasonably solid and the lower price tag makes it an attractive SUV to buy. However, the planned withdrawal of Isuzu from the American car market is worrying although Isuzu is offering an impressive seven year or 75,000 mile powertrain warranty and the car is being offered with tempting factory incentives. Second hand models of the Isuzu Ascender are also a good SUV to buy, especially the more powerful V8 engined models mainly for their lowered prices. The fuel economy can be a bit of a problem though as well as the lack of service and support.Headlights by State: ______________________
