The Isuzu Amigo is one of the first SUVs marketed in the United States. The Amigo was produced by Isuzu from 1990 to 1994 and then from 1998 to 2004. The first generation of the Isuzu Amigo experienced limited sales. The second generation of the Isuzu Amigo experienced better sales.
Isuzu introduced the Isuzu Amigo as a compact sport utility vehicle in the 1990s. The Amigo was first introduced into the United States car market in 1989. Unlike the popular trucks at the time, Isuzu created the Isuzu Amigo to focus more on sportiness than on utility. Thus, the Isuzu Amigo was offered more features fit for an urban run about and light hauling vehicle but less power. Unfortunately, SUVs at the time were generally ignored by the car buying public and the Isuzu Amigo sold poorly mainly because the Amigo was considered by many car buyers to have too little power. The first generation of Isuzu Amigos were discontinued in 1994. In 1998, Isuzu relaunched the Isuzu Amigo aiming to ride on the rising popularity of the SUV. The Isuzu Amigo was completely redesigned. While a lower powered engine was available, Isuzu finally made a V6 available for the Isuzu Amigo. The Isuzu Amigo was also firmed up for use in moderate off roading and, more commonly, on slippy roads. A tougher, more off-road driving friendly version of the Isuzu Amigo was also introduced. This was the Isuzu Amigo Ironman Edition. This particular model of the Amigo featured several revisions to make the Amigo a serious off roader. The Isuzu Amigo Ironman Edition is the rarest model of the Amigo.
The 1991 to 1994 models of the Isuzu Amigo were decidedly underpowered. The two wheel drive version of the Amigo had a weak 2.3 litre engine which produced an abysmal output of 96 hp. The 4 wheel drive version had a 2.6 litre engine which, though more powerful than the 2.3 litre engine, was still unimpressive. Although Isuzu continuously introduced new features for the Amigo, sales were still unimpressive until it was discontinued in 1994. The 1998 relaunch of the Isuzu Amigo featured a complete redesign of the car. The engines available for this model include a 2.2 litre engine with a 130 hp output and a 3,2 litre V6 engine with a 205 hp output and 214 ft-lb of torque at rpms of 3,000. By far, the V6 engine was the more popular engine for this Isuzu Amigo model. Isuzu also introduced the Amigo Ironman Edition, a specially tuned model which was meant for off road use. The car featured Intelligent Suspension Control, limited slip differential, DANA 44 rear end, adjustable off road shocks and larger tires.
The first generation Isuzu Amigo has little worth a second hand buy while the second generation Isuzu Amigo deserves a second glance. The SUV has relatively a powerful engine, solid performance and is surprisingly thrifty on fuel. The Amigo Ironman Edition is also a very good choice for a second hand SUV, although it is rarer to find.Headlights by State: ______________________
