The Oldsmobile 98 was a full size automobile made by Oldsmobile, a division of the American car maker General Motors. The Oldsmobile 98 was the flagship model of Oldsmobile and it generally sold well during its production period.
The Oldsmobile full size automobile served as the flagship model of Oldsmobile for more than fifty years. The original version of the Oldsmobile 98 was first released in 1941. During the second world war, production of the vehicle was stopped. Production continued once the war was over. The Oldsmobile 98 was produced as the flagship model of Oldsmobile and the car was regularly sold as the top of the line car model in the lineup of Oldsmobile car models. The Oldsmobile 98 would remain the best selling car under Oldsmobile, regularly outselling the Oldsmobile 66 and the Oldsmobile 76. This changed, however with the introduction of the Oldsmobile 88 in 1949. The Oldsmobile 98, along with the Oldsmobile 88 proved to be the major carriers of the Oldmsobile brand in the full size car segment. In most General Motors car divisions, sharing body panels between models of the different divisions of the car maker was a common practice and General Motors had a system in place to handle this. However, the Oldsmobile 98 was notorious for breaking this system and often did not share body panels with the other car makers of General Motors such as those from Cadillac and Buick. The Oldsmobile often carried top of the line features as befitting its flag carrier status in Oldsmobile's line up of cars. One of the most interesting technological advancements that the Oldsmobile 98 featured was the Twilight Sentinel system which used a timer to automatically turn on or off the headlights of the car. The timer was set by the driver. The Oldsmobile generally had the most luxurious interior and exterior trim among the car models made by Oldsmobile. Introduced in 1941 and ended in 1996, the Oldsmobile 98 was regularly the top seller for Oldsmobile.
The Oldsmobile 98 went through several changes throughout its production period of more than 50 years. Since its first release, the Oldsmobile 98 has featured a number of technological enhancements that made the previous version of the car a vastly different machine than the latest version. The original version of the Oldsmobile 98, the first generation which started selling in 1941, was sold as a 2 door coupe and as a 4 door sedan. It had a front engine rear wheel layout and used a straight six engine. This production model lasted only one year due to the second world war. In 1949, the second generation of the Oldsmobile 98 was introduced. This time, along with the 2 door coupe and the 4 door sedan body type, a 2 door convertible was also used. The car retained the front engine rear wheel drive layout of its predecessor. In contrast, the last version of the Oldsmobile 98, the eighth generation of the car which was released in 1991 and discontinued in 1996, was available only as a 4 door sedan. It had a front engine front wheel drive layout and was based on the C platform of General Motors. The engine used for the car was a Buick 3.8 litre V6 engine and the transmission available was a 4 speed automatic transmission.
A big car with big tastes, the Oldsmobile 98 is the car for those who prefer the large American automobiles of old. For those who are on a budget and are wary of high fuel prices, this is not the car model to go for. Headlights by State: ______________________
