The model year 1985 saw the introduction of the Volvo 740 to the car market. It was a more simply equipped version of the widely popular Volvo 760. Intended to be a mid-size car, the Volvo 740 was different from others of its same class because it offered more style, a better performance, and was a more luxurious ride than most. In fact, even if this car has been out of production for many years, one can still see many Volvo 740s on the road today. This is because the car was built with a powerful body and a reliable engine. The Volvo 740's claim to fame is its ability to run for hundreds of thousands of miles.
Offered from 1985 until 1992, the Volvo 740 was available as a four-door sedan or a five-door station wagon. It had a body that was big, solid, and practical, built mainly for luxury and safety. The instrument panel was built for easy reach of the driver. It also boasted a spacious luggage compartment and interior. In keeping with its aim to market the 740 as a luxurious drive, it was fitted with leather seats and had central heating. Most models also have power steering, and electric windows. Housing a 2.3L I4 engine that delivered 114 horsepower, the Volvo 740 also boasted 4-speed automatic, 4-speed manual, and 5-speed manual transmission types. The later years saw the Volvo 740 undergoing minor cosmetic changes such as new composite headlamps and tail lights reminiscent of the Volvo 780. In 1991, the car was given an updated dashboard. Mechanical changes on the Volvo 740 in the subsequent years included larger connecting rods for the B230 motor, upgraded fuel system from the old Bosch LH-Jetronic 2.2 to 2.4, and the replacement of the mechanical engine cooling fan into an electric fan. The upgraded fuel system provided the Volvo 740 onboard diagnostics that were accessible from under the hood. The Volvo 740 were offered in several trim levels or versions. These included the GL, GLE, and GLT Worldwide. A version sold in Italy was different from these trims, though. Called the 740 Turbo, it was equipped with a different engine, the B204FT. It also sported other features that were not available with models released in other parts of the world, such as a Garrett T3-series turbocharger.
Reviews of the Volvo 740 states that the car is a comfortable and safe ride. The buyer's money is never wasted because with careful maintenance, one can be assured of the Volvo 740 running for many, many miles. Handling can be a bit difficult, but for the practiced driver, this can be easily overcome. Most owners are also appreciative of the fact that almost all Volvo cars are easy to maintain and repair, one only needs even the most basic training or a good mechanic to check the car. This also applies with both models of the Volvo 740. Overall, one can say that the 740 is perhaps the most reliable of its kind.
