The Mazda 626 was a line of automobiles produced by Japanese car maker Mazda primarily for its export markets. The Mazda 626 enjoyed good sales accounting for the longevity of the car model line.
The Mazda 626 was first introduced in 1979. The car was based on the Mazda Capella, an exclusive car model for Mazda for its home car market Japan. The Mazda 626 replaced the Mazda 616 and the Mazda RX-2. Upon its release, the Mazda 626 became the large family car of Mazda. The Mazda 626 was also the basis of the Ford Telstar. The Mazda 626 was in production from 1979 up to 2002. During its production period, the Mazda 626 went through several changes in body styles. In the North American car market, the Mazda 626 was actually sold as a compact car in its first generation and second generation iterations. The third, fourth and fifth generation of the Mazda 626 were moved up to the mid size car markets. During its release, the Mazda 626 was quite successful in the North American car markets and the sales figures generated by the Mazda 626 was quite impressive and, for several years after, the Mazda 626 remained one of the top sellers in the line of cars made by Mazda.
The Mazda 626 went through several updates and changes throughout its production year. The last versions of the Mazda 626 were Mark 5 versions of the car which included Mazda 626 car model years 1998 up to 2002. The Mark 5 Mazda was available only as a four door sedan. The car had a front engine front wheel drive layout. There were several engines available for the Mark 5 Mazda 626 which were a 1.8 litre F I4 engine, a 2.0 litre F I4 and a 2.5 litre KL V6 engine. The transmissions available for the car were a 5 speed manual transmission and a 4 speed automatic transmission. The Mazda 626 is solid and dependable on the road. The car has decent acceleration with the I4 engines. The V6 engines gives more power to the car which greatly benefits acceleration. The manual transmission is the best way to get the engine power to the wheels. The automatic transmission is less of a performer, producing uncomfortable down shifts from time to time. The suspension of the car is on the stiff side but the car can handle most road bumps with ease. The handling of the Mazda 626 Mark 5 is adequate. Its not as sporty as other car models in its class but it is solid on the road. The car generates minimal body lean on fast and quick turns. The fuel efficiency of the Mazda 626 is about class average. The V6 engine drinks more fuel than the I4 engine and the automatic transmission increases fuel consumption for the car while the manual transmission gives better control over the engine revving and, consequently fuel consumption of the car.
The Mazda 626 offers a solid if unimpressive package. It often gets overlooked on the car lot as a consequence. This means that interested buyers can expect to have better pickings and lower price tags if they go looking for a second hand Mazda 626. Headlights by State: ______________________
