The Pontiac 6000 was a mid size vehicle produced by General Motor's Pontiac car division. The car sold fairly well in the United States car market.
The Pontiac 6000 was entered by Pontiac in the mid size car segment of the United States car market. The Pontiac 6000 featured very conservative styling. In the line up of car models from Pontiac, the Pontiac 6000 was placed below the Pontiac Bonneville car model and above the Pontiac Phoenix car model. The Pontiac 6000 was built on the A-body platform of General Motors and shared the same platform with several General Motor car modles including the Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, the Buick Century and the Chevrolet Celebrity. The car was the replacement of the Pontiac LeMans. When it was discontinued in 1991, it was replaced by the Pontiac Grand Prix. The Pontiac 6000 STE was a trim level introduced for the Pontiac 6000 line of cars in 1983. It was positioned as a competitor to the car models of BMW and Audi. However, in terms of performance and styling the Pontiac 6000 was not very competitive. The Pontiac 6000 was quite popular during its period. The Pontiac 6000 STE version was also on the Ten Best list of Car and Driver magazine from 1983 to 1985. Sales for the Pontiac 6000 were relatively good until it was discontinued in 1991.
The Pontiac 6000 mid size vehicle was available as either a 2 door coupe, a 4 door station wagon or a 4 door sedan. The car was built on the A-body platform of General Motors and was available in either a front engine front wheel drive layout or in a four wheel drive layout. Several engines were made available for the Pontiac 6000 during its production period. For the 1982 to 1991 model years of the car, the Tech IV I4 2.5 litre engine was available. From 1982 to 1986, the LE2 2 barrel V6 2.8 litre engine was available. From 1982 to 1985, a LT7 4.3 litre diesel V6 engine was available. From 1983 to 1984, a LH6 2 barrel High Outpu V6 engine with a displacement of 2.8 litres was offered. A L44 MFI V6 2.8 litre engine was offered for the 1985 model year only. For the 1986 to 1989 model year, the car was available with a LB6 MFI V6 2.8 litre engine. In 1988, a LHO MFI V6 3.1 litre engine was available for the all wheel drive version of the Pontiac 6000 which was the first use of the 3.1 litre engine in a production car. For the 1989 to 1990 model years of the Pontiac 6000, the AWD models were available with a LHO MFI V6 3.1 litre engine. For the 1990 to 1991 model year of the car, a LHO MFI 3.1 litre V6 engine was also available.
Available today in the second hand car markets, the Pontiac 6000 would serve fairly well as a daily driver. Headlights by State: ______________________
