The Mazda 323 is a car that belongs under one of the most long running nameplates of Mazda, the Mazda Familia. The Mazda Familia was first manufactured in 1964 and lasted up to 2003. The Mazda Familia was known under several names all over the world. In the North American car market, the car was known mainly as the Mazda GLC and the Mazda Protege. The Mazda 323 marque was first used for a Mazda Familia car model in the late 1970s. The Mazda 323 is a popular marque sharing several mechanical features with other car models from Ford and Mercury. The Mazda 323 proved to be a successful vehicle in the small family car market. The car went through several redesigns throughout its production period. The 1990 model redesigned the car to a front wheel drive subcompact with a hatchback body. A related sedan was also redesigned called the Mazda Protege. By the 1990s, the Mazda 323 was beginning to see a slowdown in sales. In 1994, Mazda released the final Mazda 323 models and, afterwards stopped selling the car to the public. Notably, even with the end of the production of the Mazda 323 in 1994, several companies in different countries such as Columbia and China still continued production of the car past the year 2000. The last true versions of the Mazda 323 is the 1994 Mazda 323. This Mazda 323 was basically the same with its predecessors. The body of the 1994 Mazda 323 was a 2 door hatchback. The available engine for the 1994 Mazda 323 as a 1.6 litre 4 cylinder engine capable of an output of 82 hp. The standard transmission was a 5 speed manual transmission. However, a 4 speed automatic transmission was also offered as an option. The 1994 Mazda 323 had 2 trims available, a Base trim and an SE trim with the SE trim being the upmarket version of the car. The Mazda 323 performed adequately on the road. The small engine does not really put it in the running as one of the faster cars in the market but that was understandable as the Mazda 323 was always marketed in as an economical vehicle. The manual transmission does a better job of getting the engine power to the ground. The automatic transmission basically needs the driver to floor the pedal for the car to move along. The suspension of the Mazda 323 was surprisingly good for a small car. The Mazda 323 could smother the bumps but the bigger ones did get through. The handling of the vehicle was nimble and agile but the Mazda 323 suffered from some body lean when taking corners. The fuel economy of the Mazda 323 was also impressive. The manual transmission gives better gas mileage while the automatic transmission hurts it some. The Mazda 323 is a good economy car to have as a daily driver. Although not as well appointed other car models, it does the job well enough and with minimal fuel consumption as well. Related Bookmarks
