Volvo 164 Headlights: Find Your Replacement 164 Headlight Assembly

The Volvo 164 is Volvo Cars' first attempt to venture into the market of luxury cars. The Volvo 164's history started as a concept car called P358 which was designed to be powered by a V8 Engine. However, Volvo Cars' management decided not go through with the P358 after seeing that it only appealed to a small market. Thus, the Volvo 164 was introduced in 1968 as an extension of Volvo's widely acclaimed 140 Series. Sporting a faux wood dashboard, a six cylinder engine and an optional leather interior, the Volvo 164 immediately caught the attention of people who wanted the comfort and luxury it offered in a reasonable price.

Classified as an executive car, the Volvo 164 differed from the other cars in the 140 series mainly because it had the 3-liter OHV straight 6 cylinder engine, the B-30, whereas the other cars in the series only had engines with four cylinders. It was the first six cylinder Volvo in ten years. The 164 was also fitted with dual Zenith Stromberg 175CD2SE constant-depression carburetors from 1969 to 1971. This was changed when in 1972, the Bosch first volume-production electronic fuel injection system, D-Jetronic became an option, ultimately becoming the standard for the Volvo 164 in 1973. Those fitted with the fuel injection system were marketed as Volvo 164Es, and had markedly increased performance and driveability, as well as having less toxic exhaust emissions compared to the Volvo 164s with the carburetor engines.

Transmission types for the Volvo 164 included the manual 4-speed M400 gearbox and the 3-speed automatic transmission BW35. The former was known as the M410 when equipped with an optional electric overdrive. Both the M400 and the M410 were paired with Volvo's remote control shifter which was placed between the front seats. The Volvo 164 was only marketed as a four-door sedan. As such, it shared many similarities to its Volvo 140 Series counterparts. From the cowl or hood towards the rear, the sheet metal is identical. However, the Volvo 164's front was increased by 100 millimeters in wheelbase and 60 millimeters in total length to accommodate its six-cylinder engine. The grille of the Volvo 164 was also bigger and more prominent.

Easy on the eyes and smooth to drive, the Volvo 164 was not without its own problems. The BW35 3-speed automatic transmission was said to be rough to operate and inefficient. However, it remained the popular choice in the North American market. The D-Jetronic system that became standard to all 164s since 1973 also received some flak for not being fuel efficient and for being difficult to restart.

However, the 146,008 units sold in a production period that spanned only a few years is a testament of the Volvo 164s appeal to many. Not only is it a luxurious drive, Volvo has always been a front runner when it comes to creating vehicles that withstand the test of time. The Volvo 164 is for the individual who appreciates the beauty of a classic car, but is also aware that efficiency and durability can be maximized by proper maintenance.
