Famous for its "boxy look," the Volvo 142 is one of the company's most popular older cars. The Volvo 142 appeals to people who like the solidity of the car and the spaciousness and comfort it offers. A make under the famed Volvo 140 Series which Volvo started in 1967, the Volvo 142 is indeed a car whose charm has lasted several generations. In starting the series, Volvo chose three numbers to signify three things. The first number stands for the car series, the second number for the number of cylinders, and the third number for the number of doors. Thus, the Volvo 142 is a coupe (a two-door car) that belongs to the first series and has four cylinders. The Volvo 142's design and appeal was so widely appreciated that it received Car of the Year honors from a well-known Swedish magazine.
The designers of the Volvo 142 had in mind a car that was spacious, safe, and reliable, targeted towards families or individuals who needed a bigger interior and wanted to be assured that the vehicle was secure and dependable. Thus, the body of the 142 was almost box like, built to withstand harsh weather conditions. Standard features included anti-burst door locks, built-in roll bar in the roof space, dual circuit braking system and a collapsible steering column. The boot portion or luggage compartment was especially big to allow more space for things. There were two engine types made available, the B18A which had a horsepower of 85, and the B18B with a 115 horsepower. The 4 cylinder, pushrod operated valve unit with a simple carburetor and a basic ignition system could easily be checked and serviced by most trained mechanics. This feature was most appreciated by many of the 140's owners. The transmission type was manual for the 140's. The 140's also had fully reclining front seats with head restraints. The interior was fitted with carpets, a smart change from the previous rubber flooring of other Volvo models.
Some changes were made to the later versions of the Volvo 142 in the succeeding model years. For example, Volvo 142's released during model year 1972 included side impact bars. The instrument panel was also altered from the strip speedometer to the more usual circular dial type. Cosmetic changes included the front grille being changed from one piece aluminum version to the three piece anodized aluminum grille, and lastly, shock absorbing bumpers over the grilles. The interior of the car were changed, too. The engine, for example, was moved forward to reduce the possibility of fuel tank rupture.
The Volvo 142's are considered solid and dependable cars. Its engines are known to have very long lives, ranging from 150,000 to 200,000 miles before a rebuild is needed. The design of the car was built to ensure maximum safety for the passengers. Of course, having a spacious and comfortable interior is a major plus. Making sure that your Volvo 142 is always tuned up and checked is like being assured of always having a safe and pleasant ride. Headlights by State: ______________________
